Hail.

I've created a scenario with a "P-8A POSEIDON LRS USN 2017 BOEING 737-800" equipped with Maritime Surveillance.
In the scenario, there is an enemy ship.
I don't understand why the Poseidon doesn't detect the enemy ship with all sensors activated.
I've posted the scenario.

The ship is jamming the P-8's radar. Also the way the ship is facing means the radar isn't getting a good return, its just getting the back of the ship.

Edit: One more thing, the P-8 is at 36,000ft, if it was lower its radar would perform better.

I've never heard that a radar sensor would work better if employed from a lower altitude. An EO one, sure, but what about lower altitude enhances radar performance?

It looks strange cause the P-8 radar has a range of 195 NM.
I've disabled all sensors on the enemy ship.
I've wondered me too.
Now I've disabled all sensors on the enemy ship and the P-8 LRS detect the enemy ship at only 50 NM at 2000 FT ASL.

195 nm nominal range

it's more complicated than that, once the P-8s radar is shining on the target the game will factor size of return & clutter etc.

195nm is probably a best case "i am trying to detect an iowa class, it has turrets the size of most ships, so i will detect it at 190nm"

More oblique look-down angle on sea surface --> less surface clutter. (You pay for this with reduced horizon, of course).

That is great info. I almost always send surface radar carrying planes as high as possible to cover a large area. May be time to re-evaluate blindly following that tactic.

Is this a general rule in CMANO or are there also in-built differences in this regard between the radarsystems in use around the world?

Q: about classification of the ships. How is the best way to ID ships with 2000+ tech? Its possible differentiate between large and small ships (like differentiate between DDG and CVN/tanker) using radar?
Its possible to use aircraft with SAR to ID type of the ship?

And to counter identification, could military ship mimic electronic signature of civilian vessel, use floating decoys etc?

Part of it has to do with the clutter. The higher up you go, the steeper the look down angle when you're looking for ground targets. That tends to increase the amount of unwanted reflections from uninteresting objects on the ground, hence there's an increase in the level of clutter. Against targets in the air, particularly high flying ones, clutter is less of an issue.

Going higher increases your radar horizon, but there's a competing effect which is that the clutter level increases. I imagine there's probably a "sweet spot" you could figure out by testing.
