It's a movie about the Occupation of France by Germany and the Vichy Government as well.

It was made in 1969 and I think it won an Oscar. TCM showed it last week.

VERY interesting. It was mostly/ (All?) in French and they used subtitles, but it was fascinating. They interviewed everyone from the heads of resistance in different area, people accused of being collaborators, people who had served in the Vichy government, communists who had been in the Resistance. Oh and I forgot, they interviewed two Germans who had been part of the occupation.

I wish I could have watched the whole thing, but I had a job interview that cut it short.

Greetings KurtC,
I saw this very long documentary as a high school senior for my history class to do a paper on.
It is a very revealing, insightful first person account of a French town under occupation & up to liberation.
I have watched three times over the decades

Interesting. I have never heard of this documentary but it sounds fascinating. According to the Wiki article, the documentary was apparently banned from French TV for years, possibly due to some degree of embarrassment over the whole affair of France's record in WW2 and partly because a key official called it "too one-sided" in its views, or something to that effect.

It's one of my favorite documentaries, and one that comes regularly to my BR player.
Hotel Terminus and The Memory of Justice (from the same director Marcel Ophüls)) are also quite good.

I really thought it interesting the day to day observations that people had during and after the war.

There's kind of a joke about an old Alabama game, when we beat auburn on the last play of the game in 1985 on a field goal kick. The joke goes, "If everyone who tells me they were at the game were really at the game, attendance would have been a million." - Note - the stadium seated about 65K.

And it struck me that some of these people had some similar comments about how many people said, "I was with the Resistance". And the comment by someone who really was with the Resistance went something like, "Yeah, they always told me, 'I had a gun in the kitchen drawer!' but they never used it did they? But they HAD a gun! A lot of people claim now they were in the Resistance, but they never were. I don't say anything. What would it prove?"

1943-STO refractories
1944-Hearts and minds
1945-Everyone
This period can be likened to a civil war larva. 10% of the population fighting against another 10%. The remaining 80% choosing the camp of the winner whatever it is.

I haven't seen that one but there's another film from the same year with the same subject matter called L'armée des ombres which I can highly recommend if you don't know it already.
