Check your User Preference setting for <<Combat Resolution Message Level>>. If set at 0, the message feature is turned off.

i don't have it set to zero. and there just weren't results in this combat, the others have been showing results. kind of a one off.

It must have been a depleted/unready/routed unit.

Well, he did rout after this attack. I saw him pop off to the right of the attack zone.
