2 miles down. Maybe they can rest in peace.

MBF -> RE: Wreck of Aircraft Carrier USS Lexington Located in Coral Sea After 76 Years (3/5/2018 8:20:31 PM)

Too bad the write up has so many factual errors - the Lex was not the first carrier sunk in history - ask our British friends ;-)

Wow - those photos are amazing for clarity. Thanks for posting.

Probably written with focus on US only but they should have written first US carrier loss.

Really amazing preservation of the wreck...marine life must not be very hardy 2 miles down. Must be a significant lack of oxygen down there too.

Nice! Thanks.

...and perhaps most importantly, 2 miles down the local entrepreneurs can't strip the wreck.

Years ago I watched an episode about Boing 747 from a show called Superstructures. They mentioned once that it was "The Biggest Commersial Passenger Plane of All Time" (correctly) and then they proceeded to call it Biggest Plane Ever (incorrectly) ignoring the fact that it was 3rd at the time (the 1st and 2nd are Cargo).

I am surprised they gave the depth of Lexington's wreck in meters and miles instead of buss length or baseball field lengths. :)

Anyway awesome video. Thanks Grollub.

I think someone should contact Paul Allen about funding WITP III "Allen Edition"

I was amazed by the preservation too. Even the paint roundelles and squadron mascots are crisp and colorful. It seems to me that Titanic had a whole lot more stuff growing on her, in spite of being down "just" another 30 years longer or so.

It wasn't even the first carrier sunk at the Battle of the Coral Sea. That honor belongs to IJN's CVL Shoho. [:)]

Itdepends -> RE: Wreck of Aircraft Carrier USS Lexington Located in Coral Sea After 76 Years (3/7/2018 3:31:47 AM)

Tropical seas are known for being very nutrient poor. That combined with low light and oxygen levels would explain the lack of marine life and corrosion.
