Gerbilskij -> Best way to create a recon mission (3/6/2018 9:56:42 PM)

Hello, I tried to look for previous post but I had no luck with my search. I wanted to ask advice on how to set up recon mission: what is the best way to se them up? Normally I would use the "support" mission but it does not seem to be working too well as the plane follow a fixed pattern and don't check for contacts in a patrol area (still it's ok for ELINT or AEW). Is it better to use "patrol" mission with a prosecution area limited to the area one wants to be checked?

Thanks in advance for any answer

OK, I made some tests myself and I think that either setting up patrol missions or micromanage the route/speed/alt (whenever possible) seems to work better than assigning 'support' mission.

Its also dependent on what you are looking for and what your asset is. Does the asset have eye-only, camera, IR cameras, side-scan radar, etc. That will determine what altitude and approach you might need.

If I remember right, I use patrol with a return after adjusted to fuel state in the ROEs. That forces an automatic return after a few passes. It takes some playing around with to get the right fuel state. I also have used events and either timers or exclusion areas with triggers to get an automatic return.

That is mostly if I am playing hands-off or building an AI side of a scenario. If I am playing normally, I just build some waypoints.

It depends.

If you know where the units should be, and you want to just verify that you are there and then get out, you can use a Support Mission and actually designate the exact path that the planes take to look for the targets.

If, you don't know exactly where they are, then you might want to create an area via reference points and send a unit on a Patrol Mission. The patrol units will locate (and attack--unless you tell them otherwise--if they can). Otherwise, any units that have strike missions will proceed to attack them, as long as their mission is active. The patrol a/c will hang around and watch the ships (targets) until it needs to return for fuel, unless you have told it otherwise.

These examples are generalities. Do you have something specific that you want to ask?

Doug

Thank you for your answers. I was looking more for generic advice rather than something specific. I did some tests as well and, yes, seems the best solution when micromanagement is not possible seems partol when the target is to be found and support if the position is known; I just hope will get soon a more advanced mission planner (and maybe assign escorts to support mission).

If you want some fun, fly some regular units into a patrol area and watch what (and when) they observe some things. Then, try it again with a U-2 (for fun). It is amazing with all of the different cameras that it has. Those camera capabilities were what Kevin was referring to in Post #3. Each platform has something to offer and it is fun to compare them, and their capabilities.

Have fun.

Doug
