Grazyn -> Question about subs - broaching depth (3/7/2018 7:56:02 AM)

I can't figure how to determine broaching depth for submarines, I'm looking at the database entry (english isn't my first language) and I only see length, beam (how wide it is), draft (how much it goes under the water when surfaced?) but I assume depth is measured at the keel so do I have to know the sail's height to know how close I can go to the surface? Or can I calculate it using the draft?

I don't think broaching depth is explicitly stated anywhere. However, for game purposes it will be right above periscope depth, which in most cases is -20 meters. If you want to experiment, you can test a specific sub right in the game, just start it at periscope depth and raise it 1 meter at a time until the display switches from Periscope" to Surface."

Would be nice if, like we have a Cavitation Speed limiter, to have a Broaching Depth limiter as well that navigates around water too shallow to dive in.

I like that idea; if I recall correctly there were some changes to the AI to prevent broaching in 'just above the layer' behaviour where the layer was very shallow.

If you are close enough to worry about "broaching depth" as opposed to periscope depth, you don't have enough water under your keel.

Seriously though, broaching is usually a term to mean that the hull is at least momentarily exposed. But long before that the entire sail will be exposed, and visible on radar. That's the point of concern tactically. In open sea, broaching will depend greatly on sea state (using the hull exposure definition).

I *think* if you are periscope depth it will navigate around depths that would bring it above periscope depth, but I'm not positive about this. I'd have to experiment.]

On a lighter note - ever see the movie "The Russians are Coming" ? You really don't need to be that close for any reason, but shoals and reefs do exist :-)

Grazyn -> RE: Question about subs - broaching depth (3/8/2018 7:05:49 AM)

Excuse me if it wasn't clear, but for "broaching" I mean "breaking the surface with the sub", any part of the sub sail included. Obviously I don't care about the hull being visible if the entire sail is already visible [:D]

But yeah AFAIK in CMANO it isn't possible to lower the periscope at periscope depth so getting too close to the surface would make it stand way too high over the water anyway, making the sub much more easy to detect even if it doesn't broach.

I think I remember that one from wayyyy back. Pretty funny IIRC
