If you are close enough to worry about "broaching depth" as opposed to periscope depth, you don't have enough water under your keel. Seriously though, broaching is usually a term to mean that the hull is at least momentarily exposed. But long before that the entire sail will be exposed, and visible on radar. That's the point of concern tactically. In open sea, broaching will depend greatly on sea state (using the hull exposure definition). I *think* if you are periscope depth it will navigate around depths that would bring it above periscope depth, but I'm not positive about this. I'd have to experiment.] On a lighter note - ever see the movie "The Russians are Coming" ? You really don't need to be that close for any reason, but shoals and reefs do exist :-)
