larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/20/2018 11:08:40 AM)

I've been flying the tired planes to Warsaw to rest and refit and I've finally
gotten some HQ units for some of the Warsaw airfields to help the planes refit
faster and it' working. Of the planes parked there, none seem to be yellow any
longer. They heal pretty fast in good supply with an HQ unit to help. I'm going
to deploy the green ones to better positions and apply them to the war.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/20/2018 11:23:06 AM)

The front lines are advanacing closer to Minsk and the rescue of my armor unit. It's
out of supply and can't move or shoot but it's in good shape and I'm thinking it will
survive until I can get there and rescue it. Turn four is mostly troops moving from
the mop up positions to the east to catch up with the front. I'm doing it wrong again
using my Panzers to clean up instead of zooming off into the Soviet areas. I don't
have enough people nearby to take over the task. The follow on forces are busy moving
to the sound of the guns.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/20/2018 11:39:29 AM)

As part of my plan to surround Minsk I've been thrusting units direcely east to the
south of Minsk and I'm running into some light resistance. It's probably going to
take me several turns yet to get the surround in place and I may have captured it by
then. The war goes on.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/20/2018 12:16:04 PM)

Here's the south front lines. I'm starting to run into the Stalin Line and the units
posted there. I'm pushing the Panzers to zoom and I'm running out of unemployed
follow on forces. I'm finding more Soviet units than I have people to deal with.
I'm having to prioritize attacks. I'm looking for weak spots to exploit. The idea
is to run south far enough to trap all the Soviet units on the west side of the probe
so as to be able to eventually kill them. There's a lot of them.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/20/2018 12:29:18 PM)

Here's the scene near the northern Bessarabia area. The Rumanians are active this
turn so I'm going to spring them into action. I'm going by the OOB in moving units
and it hasn't been their turn to move yet.

I'm pushing the recon units way out front to see if I can catch the Soviets before
they get away. And to capture the river crossings. Some of them are turning yellow
and I'll need to rest them. I'm using the red green yellow rule for this game.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/20/2018 12:38:08 PM)

Here's the area to the north of the Stalin Line in the south. This is the group that
has Kiev as their goal and they are surrounding enemy units and killing them then
moving east a little bit and doing it again. Progress is being made.

I'm keeping the HQ's next to their division heavy part so as to confur maximum supply
boosting capacity. And if I can park the HQ where it will reach more than one Soviet
unit that's the better.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/20/2018 12:50:00 PM)

I find myself using the Hungarians to clear out the mountainous area down south. They
aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer but I find that I get some small utility out
of them. They are almost strong enough to stand on the front line. Moreso if I stack
them.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/20/2018 1:10:27 PM)

I found another instance of stacked minors in this image, I'll fix it. I'm getting
across the river. I need to see if I can't capture all the river crossing on the
river to the east so the Soviets can't get away. Fighting my way to them, holding
off the hordes, capturing the river crossings...piece of cake.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/20/2018 1:45:33 PM)

Here's the Minsk area right now. I'm sneaking around the south of the city and I hope
to have it surrounded soon. I'm still dispatching roadblocks and clearing the rails
to Minsk from western destingations. I hope to soon have one-day rail service to Berlin.
I've got to start thinking about Smolensk sometime soon because it's the next goal after
Minsk.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/20/2018 2:03:31 PM)

There's something like 22 battles planed for turn four combat round one. I'm hoping
to get rid of a lot of the Soviet remnants so I can continue the advance faster.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/20/2018 2:08:25 PM)

The Soviet BB's near Leningrad finally became visible and I thought I'd pay one of
them a visit. I lost a lot of planes but almost sank the BB. One ore strike might
do it.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/20/2018 2:13:38 PM)

Here's the results of some of the attacks and as you can see quite a few remnants
were mopped up. This is good news. The advance can continue in some areas.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/20/2018 5:12:31 PM)

I've gotten across the river in force and I'm attacking Riga's fortress hex and at
Dagavpils he's got a mechanized regiment guarding it and it's maybe going to take
more than one attack to push him over.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/20/2018 5:32:17 PM)

At the north end of the Stalin Line down south I thought I'd try to run some recon
units around the lines of Soviet units to see if I can cut them off from their supply
and make it easier to take them down. It might not work.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/20/2018 9:03:25 PM)

The Rumanians became active this turn and I've got them busy attacking the river
crossings because it's important that we capture the river crossings on the next
river to the east. I'm hoping to prevent a lot of Soviet troops to get away.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/21/2018 3:43:15 AM)

Riga finally fell on combat round 7 and of course the bridge is busted. But the
good news is that the railhead ( selected unit ) is close to Riga and that's a vary
good thing. Supply will be good for a while. So the advance continues.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/21/2018 3:51:04 AM)

Here's some of the combat results for turn four. Lot's of attacks this turn.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/21/2018 4:07:49 AM)

Here's the north right now. I haven't moved anybody yet so there are possibilities.
I'm indicating the advance path in yellow arrows. I'm aiming for Pskov and the
bottleneck near Narva. I'm going to have to run the operations to the bottleneck
on a shoestring because troops are few.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/21/2018 4:12:01 AM)

Here's what I'm going to try to do in the middle around the marshes. I want to stick
to the roads and rails, especially the rails, while the advance goes forward.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/21/2018 4:16:33 AM)

And in the south I'm going ato penetrate the holes in the Soviet line, surround them
and kill them. I don't have a pincer ready yet but I'm building one for a thrust
toward Kiev.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/21/2018 4:26:08 AM)

The front lines have advanced further than the rails and the RR arty is almost out
of a job. I railed some down to the Odessa area to help the Rumanians get across
the river. Plus, later this arty will be handy in the take-down of Odessa. I'm
thinking about railing more RR arty down there yet. I need to find a job for them
or their services will be wasted.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/21/2018 7:12:27 AM)

I've been sending all the yellow planes to Warsaw because of the collection of
airfields there...makes a good airdrome. Anyway, I finally scrapped up one more
HQ for the other airfield that didn't have one. I fly the planes here to rest and
refit and the next turn they are almost as good as new. In one turn they go from 56%
to 75%, that kind of a jump. It's worth having the HQ's there I do believe.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/21/2018 7:14:14 AM)

I did a save game just now and zipped it up and attached it here below for those of
you that want to check things in detail. Or maybe check out the Soviet side. Or
play it yourself from this point, whatever.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/21/2018 7:32:31 AM)

I'm in the process of investing Minsk and it's going rather well.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/21/2018 2:27:34 PM)

I'm bumping up against the Stalin Line and I'm getting through his lines and putting
the surround on some small group of Soviet units. Now to destroy them. Progress is
being made.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/21/2018 5:46:38 PM)

Here's the 42nd Flak unit and originally I moved him to the airfield that has the
Rumanian bomber on it but then I remembered the stacking rule about Axis minors and
thought maybe I ought to move it still. But then the thought occured to me, what if
it was a Rumanian AA unit....could it park itself there. Just the AA unit and the
planes. I'm thinking maybe so. I think these things need to be logical and realistic.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/21/2018 10:26:02 PM)

I finally got the city of Mimsk surrounded and as a bonus I got a unit into the city
itself and there's a very slim chance that the Soviets can kick me out. I should have
Misk cleaned up in a day or two.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/22/2018 12:15:24 AM)

I'm away from the river near Riga and I'm spreading out and converting hexes and
looking for Soviet units. I've found some defenders and I'm in the process of
developing the battlefield....seeing if I can somehow surround them and kill them.
I should be at Pskov within about two turns. Depending on resistance of course.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/22/2018 12:24:29 AM)

An element of the 1st Panzer division just now pulled adjacent to Pskov, way earlier
than I was planning. Now I just need to defend the dude from counterattacks. Put
some more units in the area.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures in Russia (3/22/2018 12:39:22 AM)

The next unit to move in OOB order is this HQ unit but he seems to be thriving right
where he is. And I noticed the collection of tired planes, some of them red, and
wonder how long it's going to take to fix all those planes. They just flew in here
to rest and refit when I checked the deployment of the planes ( first thing I do each
turn ) so they won't start healing until next turn I guess. I suppose I could write
their readiness down and watch turn by turn how fast it rises. That would be interesting.
