Biggest issue at the moment is how to configure properly the JAVA executable to deal with DPI font scaling in a way that I can play this on a Surface without squinting... I am pretty sure it will be totes okay on the desktop though.

What issues are you running into? I had no issue configuring this for my SP4, with the beta.

I set my Java executable to override, scaling performed by system.

BletchleyGeek -> RE: First impression anyone? (3/24/2018 1:20:55 PM)

Hello,

The fonts are way too small compared with the font size I get on this platform on other apps, with the same settings. Also, widgets like radio buttons etc seem to be a bit outsized wrt what one should expect. The layout of some game windows is a bit broken as a result.

Royal Fusilier -> RE: First impression anyone? (3/25/2018 3:51:17 AM)

DW reminds me so much of Operation Crusader and that is a very good thing. The play seems very intuitive and once you get the mechanics in hand it is a joy to play. Just have to remember to assign Combat+ Supply to the critical HQ's each turn. DOH!

Loving this new game! The fog of war is very exciting in this game. I am learning how to use my Recon units to keep track of a large formation in one of the scenarios. Well, back to the game.

kosmoface -> RE: First impression anyone? (3/25/2018 4:09:55 PM)

Fog of war is really well done. Something most games do neglect. I find it very important and together with logistics something strategy games can gain a lot of enjoyable depth.

To be honest I tried the free version two times and I never got into it, but this one: Very well done! Good Job, I like it very much.

Hi,

I too am at the stage of having run through the tutorial and read here and there some more. Great game, all I hoped for[:D]. Hope I am not insulting anyone in the team but not so unconventional a system, but I mean that positively. Just does everything exceptionally well[:)].
This is an operational game system that will run and run. Looking forward too many a setting being covered in future. Very high-quality production.
Congratulations to the team!
All the best,
Kip.
PS. Very minor point, unit counters could be smaller relative to the hexes. One could still zoom to get the detail that way if people wished.

kipanderson -> RE: First impression anyone? (3/30/2018 2:47:46 PM)

Hi,
Am honing my skills by playing just a small section of a complex, major scenario. Will play this section again and again till I am fully there. All I hoped for and more. In the tradition of reviews, a “must buy…” for anyone interested in operational games. If a review of a book on Amazon an easy five stars. An instant classic. Traditional operational game but in WEGO format.
I particularly love the reply frame by frame[:)]. Gives me time to understand how things play out in an entertaining way.
All the best,
Kip.

Disapointing so far, struggling with the game system - sequence of events, 'clunky' interface, something I'll have to get use to..
Trouble is, its the only desert sim out there.
...will be a modders paradise
3 out of 5

lpoolrat -> RE: First impression anyone? (3/30/2018 10:39:24 PM)

I love it. Need more scenarios. Only 1 complaint, wish I didn't have to use the keyboard at all. I'm pretty lazy. LOL

rhinobones -> RE: First impression anyone? (3/30/2018 10:46:49 PM)

I know that a couple of years ago (before Matrix became involved) the development team was playing round with Eastern European type scenarios. There might even be some screen shots still available on the web.

My hope is that once the sales and demand for WEGO games is established, Matrix will expand 1942 to other theaters and wars.

Regards, RhinoBones

I jumped right in and started playing, but now I am realizing there is quite a bit of depth in this game system. I have been learning how to use the supply system which I really like because is forces the player to make some choices of which units to allocate the supply.

Yogi the Great -> RE: First impression anyone? (3/31/2018 7:02:12 PM)

Yup this may take me awhile. As the saying goes hard to teach an old dog new tricks. [&:]

So far read the rules but too much there for me to remember well which isn't uncommon. But this is quite different with a lot of things to do with each and every unit or stack you want to do something with.

Read the tutorial and quick start but same thing. The days of simple values on counters and easy movement have passed me by. I certainly see some real innovation here and great potential. For me and from a few comments at least some others jump in and learn as you play is going to be difficult. Set this, set that (first you have to find all these things which doesn't come natural) allocate this, allocate that, coordinate this, coordinate that etc. [sm=Christo_pull_hair.gif]

As I started, this may take awhile [sm=Cool-049.gif] But seeing some of the other postings this may be worth the effort if it eventually clicks somehow in my brain. [sm=innocent0001.gif]

+1

countrboy -> RE: First impression anyone? (4/2/2018 11:30:43 PM)

I'm loving it. Usually not a fan of the operational games, prefer the more strategic level, but this game is great. A few minor quirks and grumbles, but that's normal. I really enjoy the WEGO system, far closer to real life than IGO UGO. 5 outta 5 from me.

If it makes you feel any better, when I first started beta testing this game, it took me awhile to wrap my head around the UI and rules. But once it clicked in my noodle, I really started loving it. What you're experiencing sounds exactly what I experienced. And that's why I decided to do the User Guide/Tutorial. You'll get there, Yogi. [sm=00000436.gif]

Okayrun3254 -> RE: First impression anyone? (4/3/2018 10:30:44 PM)

I just discovered the supply button on the unit detail pop up window. I can allocate movement, or combat supply, or both, directly to the HQ or units without going into the main supply window. Very nice feature.

countrboy -> RE: First impression anyone? (4/3/2018 10:35:05 PM)

I'm busy commanding the Italian 10th Army in the battle for Sidi Barrani, and it feels exactly like it should - a somewhat unwieldy mass of troops, steamrolling across the desert, plagued by traffic jams and routing errors, being forced to assemble overwhelming odds in the face of even the slightest resistance, while watching my supplies and off map assets carefully and doling them out like hard won presents. I love it.

Someday I hope to set the correct at-start conditions for the player where the Supply Button is not considered "a discovery". Thanks for sharing none-the-less!

The last wego game I played is Stalingrad and America invade(V for victory serie in 1999). Is the game very difficult to learn ? I remember that Stalingrad and America invade were a little bit complicated to use

Yes, this game is difficult to learn.

Somebody had to say it.
