Miller -> Quick HQ question (4/6/2018 3:07:00 PM)

HQ's with a command radius of 1 hex, do they have to be in the same hex as the other units or can they be in the adjacent hex and still give the benefit?

At some point - I forget when - MichaelM made a change so that the range of the effect equals the range shown on the unit's display. So radius 1 means it will have effect in surrounding hexes.

The old way, going all the way back to WITP (not WITP-AE) was to subtract 1 so that a radius of 1 meant influence in the same hex only. IIRC WITP-AE started out that way and as I said changed I'm-not-sure-when.

AE has always, from day one, had the HQ range counted from the hex.  So Corps HQs with a range of 1 have always had the range to be 1 hex (in all directions) from the currently occupied hex.

Thanks - I might have been thinking about a developer comment on the change being made between WITP and WITP-AE.

Possibly.

I clearly recall locating a BigJ62 post from when AE was released (or very shortly thereafter) confirming the range was from the hex occupied by the HQ. I never bothered finding a dev post on the issue before the release of AE.

witpqs,

Further to my last post.

This is the September 2009 thread wherein BigJ62 explained the HQ range.

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2249265&mpage=1&key=&#2250118

As you can see from that thread the range starting with the adjacent hex (ie an HQ with a range of 1 = the six adjacent hexes to the hex currently occupied by the HQ) was in AE from day 1 and in classical WITP from at least the last major patch, which corresponds with the commencement of BigJ62's coding involvement with the game engine.

Adding: I always hated the 'range 1 = 0', 'range 5 = 4', and so on. Really loved it when they made that change.

Miller -> RE: Quick HQ question (4/7/2018 6:23:35 PM)

Thanks for the clarification.
