Units Extracted The following units were extracted from the Singapore region. Most were picked up by floatplanes and flown to Java, where they loaded onto ships and went to India. Almost all are tiny fragments of the original unit. The exception is SSV Bde, which was flown by Dutch transports from Singapore to Palembang, then railed to Oosthaven, then loaded onto a ship to go to India. About 40% of SSV Bde was extracted, including about 50 combat squads. 4 units were extracted from Hong Kong, flying on floatplanes all the way from Chittagong. Yes, it is possible. Some of these units can combine into larger formations. British units: 106 RN Base Force 29 Battery/3 HAA 224 Group RAF 223 Group RAF 5 Field Rgt 2/215 Bty 80th AT Rgt 1st ISF Base Force 137/155 Field Rgt 272/273 Bty 80th AT 2 Argylls Bn 102 RN Base Force (from Hong Kong) Indian units: 2/15 Punjab Battalion 5/2 Punjab Battalion 15 Indian Bde 3/16 Punjab 28 Gurkha Bde 22 Indian Bde 6 Indian Bde 5/14 Punjab Battalion Kowloon Bde (from Hong Kong) Commonwealth units: SSV Bde SSVF Bde Canadian units: Winnipeg Grenadiers Bat (from Hong Kong) Rifles of Canada Bat (from Hong Kong) My plan is to use many of these small units to guard bases close to, but behind the lines in India, protecting against paratroop attacks. The base units will come in handy anywhere. Can the reinforcement pools support all of this? I don't know. I'll accept it if some units have to stay small, and just garrison. All of these units are either at Bombay, or will be arriving at Bombay in the next couple of days.

3 Jan 42 Sub Pickerel fired 4 torpedoes at CM Itsukushima near Babeldaob, but missed. The sub was hit by a depth charge and will retire to Brisbane for repairs. Damage is moderate, with FLOT damage around 20. Pickerel then spots what appears to be KB, heading to Babeldaob. P-40s in China sweep Nanchang, guessing that there were Nates there using ranged CAP, but nothing is found. The P-40s and H81s have made themselves known, and now move back to Ledo to train. The enemy has seriously curtailed bombing in China. I can expect Zeros and/or Oscars here soon. Georgetown is lost, as is Kendari. 4 Jan 42 xAKL Dai Lee had moved from Luzon to the east, passing north of Babeldaob, then southeast to Ulithi, then south. Today it stumbled into a group of 4 destroyers and an AMC. Probably not a combat force looking for the ship, but combat occurred. Dai Lee took 11 shell hits, and since it was carrying fuel, it had no chance. It sank after the combat. S-40 spotted an AO with TB escorts near Jolo, but 4 torpedoes missed TB Kari. Port Dickson was lost. Cagayan was lost, and the defenders retreated into the mountains at Malaybalay.

Thanks DOCUP. I enjoy writing the report right after I do my turn. It's become part of the game for me. 5 Jan 42 Sub Permit fired 2 torpedoes at xAK Santos Maru near Manado, but missed. Sub Tarpon fired 4 torpedoes at DD Asashio near Kendari but missed. It's funny, once I set up a spreadsheet to track my submarine hits I stopped getting any. Last hit was on December 26th. Singapore bombed, a daily occurrence now. Sallys at 15000 feet hit very little but get torn up by flak. Manila was bombed also. Very little damage but no flak here. 6 Jan 42 DMS Dorsey gets a depth charge hit on RO-67 at Noumea. There are big US xAPs here unloading, so it's a good thing to clear out the enemy sub. Only Dorsey was spotted by the enemy. Speaking of Le Triomphant yesterday... Day Time Surface Combat, near Iwo-jima at 107,82, Range 4,000 Yards Japanese Ships PB Yahonui Maru, Shell hits 11, and is sunk xAKL Bizen Maru, Shell hits 11, and is sunk xAKL Yamashimo Maru xAKL Juyo Maru, Shell hits 5, and is sunk xAKL Hoko Maru, Shell hits 10, and is sunk Allied Ships DD Le Triomphant Le Triomphant then reacted to the remaining xAKL and a second combat was initiated, but both sides evaded combat when the range finally closed. Le Triomphant took a bit of system and engine damage. It didn't appear to be hit during combat, so I'm guessing that it incurred damage during the reaction move, as if it was on Full speed (which it wasn't). If so, I learned something new today. Good to catch a manageable target for the French destroyer. Too bad they were just small xAKLs and not loaded with troops. Two enemy attacks in China, working over isolated Chinese behind the lines. My understanding -- which admittedly has a very spotty record [:'(] -- is that if your TF was set to mission speed, that could include high speed runs at appropriate times during the action. The only way to avoid this -- I think -- is to set to cruise speed, but then your TF may miss some opportunities. Mission speed appears to work well for most situations. But I would be interested to hear a more definitive word on the matter.

7 Jan 42 Sub Gudgeon spots battleship Kirishima, 3 cruisers, and 5 destroyers near Kavieng. The sub fires 2 torpedoes at DD Kagero, and misses. South of Hong Kong, S-38 fires 2 torpedoes at PB Eiko Maru, and gets a hit. Later, during the daylight, the sub again launches 2 torpedoes at the same patrol boat, and again gets a hit. Probably sunk after that. Near Balikpapan, O16 fires 2 torpedoes at TK Teiyo Maru, but misses. I-157 is reported to have hit 2 mines at Singapore. The sub is most probably sunk. Their are friendly and enemy mines there. Near Donggala, sub Narwhal fires 2 torpedoes at xAK Madras Maru, but misses. Narwhal took a load of supply to Pakhoi, and is now headed to Soerabaja for fuel and torpedoes, and will redeploy to the South Pacific. DD Le Triomphant started to return to Wake Island, about to pass near Marcus Island. It was not spotted today. Another enemy cleanup attack against the Chinese in the north-central plains. I'm trying to be a nuisance running remnants of units around, stalling for time before they are destroyed. Kuala Lumpur was lost. Over 30 enemy units are next to Singapore now. US carriers Lexington, Saratoga, and Enterprise are at Auckland repairing minor damage and training squadrons. Yorktown is in Hawaii and headed to Auckland. Yorktown was not spotted at Pearl Harbor despite a pesky Glen sub in the area, spotting most task forces. I set my first Bolo squadron to ASW at Pearl Harbor today. Not well trained, but there are some pilots near 60 in ASW. It will be another month till the many other Bolo units are trained enough to start lighting up the subs.

Le Triomphant Looking at Tracker, I saw that Le Triomphant did not incur 12 SYS damage and some engine damage in the turn when it reacted to the xAKL. It actually accumulated the damage during the week of travel to that point. It was an unusually high amount of damage for a week's travel at mission speed, but it wasn't all at once like I originally thought.

8 Jan 42 Kavieng is invaded by fast transport. The defenders were evacuated long ago. Rabaul is invaded: Pre-Invasion action off Rabaul (106,125) 2 Coastal gun shots fired in defense. Japanese Ships DD Ariake DD Yugure DD Shiratsuyu AMC Hokoku Maru TF 142 troops unloading over beach at Rabaul, 106,125 Japanese ground losses: 198 casualties reported Squads: 8 destroyed, 0 disabled Non Combat: 4 destroyed, 0 disabled Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled This is interesting for two reasons. First, this is the task force that stumbled upon my xAKL near Manus Island. Second, the Japanese 4th Division was unloading here. I don't think the whole division can fit on a single AMC and a few destroyers though. Maybe I'm wrong. 4th Division was reported at Truk, so maybe this part of it went directly to Rabaul past Manus. Regardless, there's no defense at Rabaul. Lark Force was moved to Tulagi, and the base force here was mostly extracted by Catalinas. But today, 5 Cats were shot down over Rabaul, from KB's fighters just one hex away. Near Donggala, east of Balikpapan, 6 US PT boats from Manila are heading south, jumping from base to base for fuel. They ran into 2 patrol boats, but both sides chose to evade combat. Cebu troops are bombed. Rabaul troops are bombed by Vals. None were hit, which isn't a surprise. I would think that 3 support squads could hide out successfully at a sizable base. Some enemy bombing in China. And at Singapore. Some Lilys lost to flak there. British destroyers Thanet and Scout, originally from Hong Kong and heroes of a couple of fights between there and Borneo, make it to Colombo escorting damaged light cruiser Durban. 9 Jan 42 Enemy landing at Rabaul continues. I-6 spots an xAKL task force in the shipping lanes east of Lahaina, Hawaii. AM Quatsino does very minor damage to the sub. This is the first sub activity that has found my current main shipping lane. Then, nearby, I-6 spots a cargo task force guarded by CL Leander and PC Morris. 2 torpedoes are fired at Leander but missed. The sub got away. Between Kendari and Manando, sub Snapper spots big AMC Asaka Maru and fires 4 torpedoes. One hits, but it is a dud. A Chinese corp is eliminated by a tank regiment near Sinyang, China. Rabaul is lost, as is Kavieng. With 12,790 enemy troops at Rabaul, it does appear that the whole enemy 4th Infantry Division is there. The 12 F4F-3s that start at Wake Island were picked up by an xAK which delivered supply there. The fighters are now unloading at Pearl Harbor. xAK Ethel Edwards started in the Philippines and was badly damaged near Balabac. It hid at Kudat for awhile, then moved to Balabac, where it stayed longer. With damage at SYS 22/FLOT 50/ENG 10/FIRE 0, it wasn't going anywhere fast. I have moved it successfully to Manila, where it will repair in the shipyard and take its chances with enemy bombers. Best case, it is repaired in 15 days. If that happens, it will then try the northern escape route. Getting it to safety would be a major accomplishment, even if it is of little importance. Johore Baru now has 36 units, and enemy bombers are now targeting ground troops at Singapore. The Imperial Guard Division is up north, at Georgetown now, slowly working its way south. It's to be seen whether the Singapore crossing will wait for that unit or not. 3 recently built ships at Singapore have slipped up the Sumatran coast and made it to Sabang. The 2 HDMLs and YMS don't have enough fuel to get to safety, but a rescue task force is standing off to the northwest, waiting for the small ships to join up. Good to see you Bif1961, and good luck with your war. 11 Jan 42 Bettys, Sallys and Lilys attack Singapore, all at 15,000 feet, and flak does claim more planes. A few destroyed and lots damaged. DBB mod has tougher flak. It feels more historically accurate to me, especially in naval attacks. Medan is bombed for the first time, sizing up the defenders. CV Indomitable has appeared at Aden. It will escort battleship Royal Sovereign to Bombay, then move to Australia to augment the US carrier fleet. SigInt says that Maizure 2 SNLF is preparing for Wake. Wake has been ignored so far. KB just disappeared after the Rabaul attack. My guess is that when Wake is invaded, it will be with KB support. I think that I've done enough to make OPilot want to cover his invasions. I've been preparing to reinforce Wake, if it continued to be ignored. I'm collecting the 3 US infantry battalions stationed on various Hawaiian islands, and will combine them into a regiment at Pearl Harbor. The plan is to ship them to Wake, without carrier support, hoping to sneak them in and just about max out the stacking limit. Nothing is going to save Wake if the enemy really wants it, but combined with the defenses already there, it could be a thorn in the side, and the enemy's first attempt to take it could well fail with the surprise of a stronger defense. I'll continue with this plan unless the enemy gets to Wake first. If that happens, the regiment will reinforce Johnston Island, and maybe start prepping for something else.

If you have one yet, the US tank battalions of around 52AV carry a lot more punch than an Inf. Rgt. and cost less in the stacking limit. Two battalions of tanks would make Wake (if supplied) darn hard to take.

I have 2 US armor units so far. One just arrived at Noumea. The other is about to arrive at Sydney. So nothing at Pearl Harbor yet. I know that armor does show up there. I'll check when that will be. I don't think I'll get the chance to go to Wake though. [edit: 2 restricted armor units show up at Pearl Harbor in April. So it will be awhile.]

12 Jan 42 Ocean Island is invaded and captured by the enemy's 8th Independent SNLF Company. Near Djailolo (I would have to look up that location), sub Seadragon fired 2 torpedoes at PB Kanko Maru but missed. Anns bomb Cebu. Some bombing in Malaysia and China and Mindanao. The enemy pushes south near Patani in Malaysia and decimates the 2nd Argylls Battalion. No activity at Singapore. There was an artillery attack yesterday, but it did more damage to the enemy than the Allies. The first huge fuel shipment has arrived at Auckland. Troops continue to unload at Noumea, Suva, and Pago Pago. Mostly Noumea. Troops at Pearl Harbor start to load to reinforce Wake, if given the opportunity. SigInt says that the 20th Infantry Regiment is planning to attack Tjepoe on Java, which is just up the coast from Soerabaja. I'm sending some troops there to put up a fight. I decide that I have extra xAKs at Aden. I had just shipped fuel to Aden from Abadan, so I'm loading up about 50k fuel to go to Australia, and then the xAKs will move to the West Coast. Also, I'm taking a bunch of long range tankers from Abadan. They'll do the same as those xAKs.

13 Jan 42 Gasmata is invaded by enemy fast transport. More bombing at Singapore, and more enemy planes shot down. Cebu bombed, some bombing in Malaysia and China, nothing notable. 73 ships reported to be at Babeldaop. Not enough xAP shipping at Pearl Harbor for my regiment for Wake. About 70% is loading now. The rest will load when an xAP arrives in a few days. Hopefully they'll all get the chance to get to Wake. Enemy subs are prowling around Victoria, Canada. More than one. Trying to find them with an ASW task force. Air ASW not in the area. Units not trained yet. Allied AVPs moving around in the South Pacific, moving to set up seaplane bases at undeveloped islands here and there. I want a layer of search coverage from Tulagi to Luganville to north of Noumea, Suva, and Pago Pago. Baker has coverage now, as does Wake Island. KB has been missing since Rabaul was invaded.

14 Jan 42 Near Soerabaja, Dutch sub O24 spots RO-34 and fires 2 torpedoes, but misses. Near Madjene, sub Sealion fires 4 torpedoes at DMS W-6 but misses. Bombers hit Singapore, today at a lower altitude of 13,000 feet. Flak claims 3 Lilys and 1 Sally, not counting associated ops losses. There's a number of Japanese units that will take some time to recover, and that's about all that can be expected here. A small restricted infantry unit is bought out for just 2 points. A fragment will be flown to Java, then to Timor, then to Darwin. It will then move to the east coast of Australia and rebuild. SigInt says that the 47th Infantry Regiment is planning for Merak, and that the 33rd Division is at 57,56. This is between Rahaeng and Moumein. We already learned that this division is preparing for Rangoon. The one Burma division is at Pegu after forming from its parts, and is digging in there.

15 Jan 42 Enemy troops land at Makassar. Bombers hit Singapore, today it's back to 15,000 feet. 3 planes reportedly shot down by flak. Just east of Makassar, towards Kendari, Dutch sub O20 fires 4 torpedoes at destroyer Yamakaze but misses. This is the CVL task force. Tandjoengpinang, the island next to Singapore is invaded. A few Dutch seaplanes have been based here, and unfortunately, none are operational today to fly out. The 3 plane unit is disbanded. KB, or at least part of KB, is spotted a few hexes northwest of Rabaul. It is in a position to make me think that it will hug the New Guinea coast for operations south. Maybe Lae and Buna, maybe further south to Milne Bay, maybe all the way to Port Moresby. Port Moresby has had enemy recon steadily, so it's known that there aren't many men there. Lark Force is at Tulagi. The two sister units (names forgotten) that start at Darwin have just left Townsville with supply and are headed to Luganville. My Wake reinforcement task force has left the Hawaiian Islands unseen. Remember the 3 xAKs that supplied Pakhoi and then rounded northern Luzon in a run for safety? They passed Iwo Jima without being seen, and are now nearing the Aleutians. [edit: Funny occurrence today. I saw that the enemy did recon of San Fernando. I panicked, and went looking for the base in Southern California. :) ]

16 Jan 42 30 Zeros sweep Soerabaja for the first time. The Dutch Air Force thought they were ready, but they were not. 20 or so Dutch fighters rise to meet the enemy. 5 75A-7 Hawks, 5 CW-21B Demons, and 4 B33Ds are lost, with no enemy losses, not even to ops. The Dutch fighters are ordered to stand down and wait for an opportunity to escort naval bombers. 2 Oscar squadrons sweep Moulmein for the first time. There's no CAP here. There's a squadron of AVG H-81s at Rangoon. I move the other 2 squadrons south from Calcutta, to join the upcoming defense of Rangoon and Pegu. Enemy bombing of the usual spots, including Singapore. Maizuru 1st SNLF invades Lae. KB is near but not seen today. The Dutch put up a good defense at Makassar, which is attacked for the first time today. unfortunately Singapore is the perfect place in the DEI to recover disablements. Hopefully they are not spread out to much and have crippled a couple of large units of importance to his plans though.

17 Jan 42 Sub Sealion fired 4 torpedoes at destroyer Michishio near Makassar. They missed. Also spotted was battleship Kongo and a couple of cruisers. Shortlands was invaded by fast transport and lost. Now we get to see if OPilot uses the same fast transport method at Tulagi, the method of dropping off a small unit at a base expected to be empty. Lark Force is at Tulagi and digging in. Lae is lost. Several patrol craft are on ASW duty near Victoria. There are enemy subs in the area. PC Cyane found one, or I should say, found a torpedo. I-7 sinks Cyane. My experience has been that poor quality ASW ships get hit more often then hitting a sub, particularly if there isn't quality air ASW covering the area. DMSs sweep Allied mines at Tandjoengpinang, next to Singapore. Oscars sweep Changsha, finding a handful of Chinese Hawks. 4 out of the 5 Hawks are downed. The unit is bought out and will train in India. Lots of bombers hit Singapore. The enemy shock attacks, hoping to finish off the defenders. 18 Jan 42 Battleships Haruna and Kongo bombard Makassar. Lots of bombers hit the base during the day, and the enemy captures the base easily. Southeast of Palembang, I-165 hits Dutch sub KVII with 2 torpedoes, sinking her. KVII had not sunk any ships. This is the first Allied sub lost in the war. Oscars sweep Moulmein again. Bombers hit the base afterwards. 3 squadrons of AVG will LRCAP Moulmein from Rangoon. Malaybalay is heavily bombed. The mountain base is lost in a 5 to 1 attack. Mindanao, except for Zamboanga, is now held by the enemy. Singapore is heavily bombed. In the third shock attack, and the fifth attack overall, the base falls.
