B52H -> ORBAT Info for Early 90s/Late 80s (4/12/2018 3:08:02 AM)

Hi all,

I’ve been looking for some detailed OOBs from the late Cold War era, specifically for Desert Storm/around the time of Desert Storm. I’ve found next to no information on my own research. I find it odd that no record exists of the organization of hundreds of ships and aircraft in the early 1990s, especially in some of the Eastern bloc nations and the US Navy.

Any help with finding some info?

B52H

Hey B52H,

I’ve looked for the same data. There’s not very much online, and what little is available is often contradictory.

I managed to get my hands on Janes Fighting Ships 91-92 and a Combat Fleets from the same year; they’re really useful but not trivial to transcribe into digital format.

What specific info do you need?

Not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for, but there's a pretty comprehensive list of USAF planes deployed for Desert Storm here on Wikipedia, including deployment dates and airbases. There's also a really useful site showing all US aircraft carriers and their air wings going back to about 1950. The carriers deployed for the Gulf War were USS Saratoga (CV-60), USS America (CVA-66), USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67), USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71), USS Midway (CV-41), and USS Ranger (CV-61). Click on the carrier you want, then scroll down to the correct date.

Information on the Iraqi equipment is harder to find. In googling around researching this post, however, I stumbled on this document (PDF), which seems to be a translation of a report on the Gulf War written by Iraq after the war. Skimming through it, it looks like it has some fairly detailed info on the deployment, numbers, and types of Iraqi planes during the war. (Here's the index page it came from, with a link to the original document in Arabic as well.)

Also, globalsecurity.org has a page showing numbers of planes in the IrAF, though not where they were deployed. Another page on the air defense system also gives approximate locations for the Iraqi sector operations centers (SOC) and intercept operations centers (IOC), which were prime targets in the attacks on the opening night.

I've recently read a fair amount about the Gulf War, so this kind of thing has been on my mind a bit... [:D]

Edit: Added the two other carriers to the list.

There are two sources that reflect OOB in 89:

WP: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/graveyard/26912082/images/1377961541351.pdf

NATO: www.microarmormayhem.com/NATO_ORDER_OF_BATTLE_mod_7.doc

This and much more is on Baloogan's site: https://wiki.baloogancampaign.com/index.php/Category:Order_Of_Battle

And a bunch more including all of this is on stilesw's Dropbox

And I'm sure it will eventually make it to the CMANO Wiki once it gets going: http://weaponsrelease.com/index.php/CMANO_Main_Page

Gunnar98,

Thanks for the WP & NATO Order of Battle documents. I've included them in the Dropbox reference library for forum members.

Any member who would like to be added to the access list please PM me with your email address.

There's a 700+ page per volume set of books that was published after Desert Storm called, Gulf War Air Power Survey. It should have the information you're looking for, although portions of it are redacted. It's probably the most extensive source on the air campaign in Desert Storm and it's freely downloadable.

Osprey's Combat Aicraft 27 "Air War in the Gulf" has a good appendix that lays out Coalition OOBs in a fairly easy to read format. It includes types of aircraft, home station, and station during the war. It also includes all carrier air wings.

Thanks much for the Osprey's Combat Aircraft 27 reference. I just ordered it for the project I'm working on.
