I got rid of one German stack and there's only one left standing. I would have gotten
rid of it too but my adjacent units were yellow.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures with Brian In Italy (5/7/2018 12:35:48 AM)

I've just got some moves from Brian and I've started to look things over and move
some units around and I thought I'd take a look at the supply bubbles and compare
it with the overextended threashold and so far we're good. I thought maybe it was
five or so but it's zero so there's no worries about being overextended even with
just a single point of supply. I'll have to remember that.

Infantrymen of the recently arrived 3rd Inf Div make their way from the pier to the
check-in point on their way to the chow-hall for a hot meal, their first hot meal
of the day, in downtown Taranto. For the chow-hall the Americans have commendered
an Italian resturant for as long as the Americans are here, probably a week or less,
and the proprietor of the resturant gets 5K lire per day. It's a win-win.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures with Brian In Italy (5/7/2018 1:16:23 AM)

Next I'm moving elements of the 45th division and I've come to the engineers and they
volunteered to venture out into indian-country to capture a key cross-roads town. Now
to get some infantry folks to replace the engineers.

I'm starting to run into resistance along the coastal road and most of the expedition is
still out of position so it's going to take about half a turn to get everybody sorted out
and into formations again.

Larry,

I love the photos!

Well done in expanding your beachhead. Your are going to make the Axis defence in the area near Sicily irrelevant.

This is fun to follow.

All the best,

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures with Brian In Italy (5/7/2018 1:44:44 AM)

Here's what's going on in some of the hot spots round the map. Germans are starting
to show up where the airborne is. I'm not sure I can save them all. I'm parking ships
near them for support and there's always the CS, that I can increase a tiny bit, and
that's about the best I can do for them. I can always drop some reinforcements near
them to lend a hand because I've got 1/3 of the 82nd Airborne and the British 1st Airborne
Division that I can use but I was saving them for someother place, a more important
place, and where that is hasn't appeared yet but I think I'll know it when I see it.
I need more recon on the ports.

Larry,

Hey there Mike man. Thanks for posting. We need your input, actually Brian could
perhaps use some tips as well as me.

I'll see if I can't find some more and weave them into the game.

Thank you for your kind words. You're too kind by half. Um...I'd rather not invade the Reggio area as all the recons I've done there has revealed a near fortress. I'm watching for any rail movement from that area and there WAS some rail traffic from there going south last turn so I'm guessing he's stripping off some troops to send to the Taranto front. I'm looking for an empty port near a supply point but those are rare. So far the only one is Toulon, France, but so far that's off limits.

All the best,

No need to follow, join in and tell me what I'm supposed to do with the little islands, Corsica and Sardinia. I've got a Panzer Division on one of them, I don't remember which right off the top of my head. My game with Ian is mixing with this game in my head somewhat. I just need to remember that I'm the Allies in my game with Brian.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures with Brian In Italy (5/7/2018 2:03:55 AM)

The best kind of attack that this DD can muster is a "port attack" on the three
port hexes near and including Reggio and I'm wondering if that means there's no
occupant there or what. I'll need to send over somebody to check it out. Maybe
a recon unit. In fact the 8th Indian Division might have one of those and they are
already staged and ready to sail. They are the reserve division and I'm waiting
for a good time to comitt them and this comes really close to being it. I need to
scope out what else is happening on the front. This division may be needed at
Taranto for all I can envision.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures with Brian In Italy (5/7/2018 2:22:26 AM)

Going on the intel that was gathered by the UK DD's offshore of Reggio, I decided
to drop a paratrooper unit in Reggio and see what happens. He landed unscathed.
So then I sailed the 8th Indian Division across the channel from Messina and invested
the ports and cities and the next thing I need to do is fly in some CAP for them.
One or more of the shorter-ranged fighter units might suffice.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures with Brian In Italy (5/7/2018 5:46:23 AM)

Here's the situation just before I ended my turn. I've got units all over the map
and some small progress is being made.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures with Brian In Italy (5/7/2018 1:13:59 PM)

I had the 36th Inf Div staged and ready to sail so I thought I'd take them up the
west coast for a little ways and what should I find but an empty port, so I grabbed
it and moved the rest of the division up there and now I need to find some supply
for those folks. I guess I need to advance up the west coast to complete the LOC
to them.

Here's what the front lines look like just before I ended my turn. So far so good.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures with Brian In Italy (5/7/2018 10:39:11 PM)

I thought I might ought to invade near Salerno because I found an empty port to slip
a unit into and then I discovered that the other ports were empty too and brought the
entire US 1st Armored Division up here.

I'm still wondering if I should start dropping bridges or not.

Larry,

Well done. It will be very interesting to see how Brian counters your moves, if he can.

Your aggression has paid off in spades.

Wow, Brian must be finding it hard watching the playback of your moves. You would be driving me nuts.

Agreed, and likewise for Larry's other game - which while not quite as far along - Ian is poised to wipe out the Sicily garrison almost entirely.

It'll be interesting to see how these openings play out. On the one hand fewer Axis defenders and farther north starting points for the first main lines to solidify on. On the other, Larry's allies have to be in even direr supply straits than they were in his last game early in the invasion.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures with Brian In Italy (5/9/2018 1:49:20 AM)

Here's the Taranto area right mow. I'm still trying to make some progress against the
German roadblock but the supply level is still rather low and the Allied units aren't
primarily anti-tank units. I need some tanks to match what the Germans have.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures with Brian In Italy (5/9/2018 1:54:44 AM)

Here's what's going on in the Salerno area right now. I've flown in a lot of
Airborne troops and surrounded the German attackers and now I'm counterattacking
to try to see if I can't dispose of them without too much trouble.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures with Brian In Italy (5/9/2018 2:04:17 PM)

I finally succeeded in forcing a hole in the German lines near Taranto and I've been
moving units south to start the drive south to meet up with the units making their
way north.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures with Brian In Italy (5/9/2018 2:58:51 PM)

Here's the Salerno area right now. I'm sending the 34th Infantry Division north
towards Naples and points north. I haven't decided yet who is going to go south
along the coastal road. I'm concentrating on killing the German stacks first. It's
going to take several attacks with support from the aircraft and the UK CA's. There's
an Axis light bomber parked near Rome and I've got an airfield strike scheduled for
that. I'm repairing the bridges and converting the roads between Reggio and Taranto
and the rails are getting repaired slowly. I'm going to eventually move the RR
engineers to Salerno to start repairing rail heading north. I'd like to sack Rome
within about two weeks.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures with Brian In Italy (5/9/2018 8:13:35 PM)

US Rangers are landing at Salerno early in the morning and they have equipment to
unload before they will be "landed" and it's going to take another hour or so. They
are to load on trucks to be moved to the north to the site of the assembly area.

Larry,

Great stuff. Your plan in the South has worked very well. What is next? It looks like a good number of Axis units are cut off in the South. Getting rid of them should get easier with time. What is your supply situation looking like?

Here's what the supply situation looks like around Naples and Salerno. Just fine
and more than enough. I just need it to propagate outward a long ways.

Here's the supply situation around Taranto and points south. On the East side.
I'm trying to establish an LOC from Reggio to Taranto and Naples. I thought I'd
repair the rail later when I have time to do it. Besides the action is going to
move from the south to up near Rome pretty quickly now and I'd rather repair the rails
around Rome headig north.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures with Brian In Italy (5/10/2018 12:26:11 PM)

Brian reports that the 26th Panzer isn't activating when it got attacked and there's
some units on the Gustav Line that worry him. Or something like that. I wish he had
posted a picture or an example or something. He thinks that the scenario needs a small
adjustment. I wish he had included more data for the problem. I watched the playback
and didn't see anything remarkable.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures with Brian In Italy (5/10/2018 12:38:54 PM)

I drove a ship up to Anzio and found two ports empty and converted the hexes with
my ship so that there's a friendly port there now so I thought I'd run some Rangers
up there to see if they could capture the supply point or not and judge conditions
for maybe another invasion closer to Rome.

[image]local://upfiles/16287/1985850647DA4BF1BCD623F2BE0867A0.jpg[/image]

larryfulkerson -> RE: Adventures with Brian In Italy (5/10/2018 12:43:07 PM)

So I wandered ashore and found the supply point lightly defended and I'm thinking
that one of my infantry regiments might be able to RBC that unit out of the hex.
So the invasion is on. Next stop Rome.
