June 2

1941 - First escort carrier, USS Long Island (CVE-1), commissioned

Unfortunately most of us would have preferred another fleet carrier :D

Nonono.....its good to train your pilots.....as target practise:D ;)

Oh no! Not another Long Island bashing? That poor ship. Her only mistake is coming on the scene too soon. Send her back 3 times until she has all her new armaments and use her with a squadron of fighters as CAP for your old BBs or with SBDs as ASW for your important convoys.

How about making tea. :D

That's the best suggestion I've heard all day.

Mike_B20 -> (6/3/2003 2:51:24 AM)

I tried using 15 Devastators on Long Island for anti sub patrol at 30%.
Checked the carrier excort a few days later and only 4 were operational and 11 damaged.

Does the Long Island have ground crew for aircraft maintenance?

Drex -> (6/3/2003 3:09:05 AM)

Maybe the crews were too green. I never use LI until I've sent her back a couple of times.

crsutton -> (6/3/2003 5:26:57 AM)

I was not aware that she could operate planes. Just thought she was a ferry.

denisonh -> (6/3/2003 5:32:54 AM)

Only planes I have had success operating off the LI are SDBs.

Used her to suppplement my strike aircraft with a carrier group, and even used her with the Wasp as a decoy TF (With an SBD strike group of 45-50 aircraft, my opponent thought I had two full CVs in the TF)

Fred98 -> (6/3/2003 6:56:54 AM)

The Long Island is intended to be a ferry.

In some scenarios she is needed to carry fighter aircraft from one side of the map to the other.

In the short scenarios there is no advantage in sending her back to Pearl.

In the longer scenarions if you send her back you run the risk of having your fighters in the wrong place at a critical moment.

Hmmm - that is interesting!

I lost the Saratoga but its planes flew off and I was able to get them down to Rockhampton, rest them up and let them rebuild. I then sent the LI to Rockhampton to ferry the planes back to Noumea.

The first group I tried was the Avengers, where I put a group of 16 on board the LI while it was docked. Then when the LI got to Noumea there were 4 active Avengers and 12 in reserve. I transferred the 4 active planes to Noumea, but couldn't get the reserve planes off, so I disbanded the LI into port. Next turn there were 8 Avengers in the group on shore and only 8 in reserve on the LI. Next time, 12 and 4, next time 16 and none.

So I figured it had something to do with having the LI docked in a TF instead of disbanded, so the next time I sent the LI to Rockhampton I disbanded it before I loaded one of the two Dauntless groups - this one only had 10 planes, despite sitting in Rockhampton for a couple of weeks on training/0. This time the Dauntless' stayed "on the deck" until the LI returned to Noumea, at which point I disbanded the LI and transferred all 10 Dauntless to the airfield there.

Next trip I did the same thing with the other Dauntless group, which had 16 planes. None went into reserve and I was able to transfer all of them to Noumea.

Finally, I loaded the fighter group, which only had 16 planes. Midway to Noumea, I checked the LI and there were now only 4 Wildcats, with none in reserve or anywhere else. When I got to Noumea I unloaded those 4, and a week or so later, they are still sitting at 4 planes.

So as far as I'm concerned, the LI is still the "Lost Island" and I don't think I'll use if for any more transfers until ( and if ) the game gets patched again.

I tried using 18 Dauntlesses on Long Island on anti sub patrol.

The operational maximum for a CV or CVE is capacity pls 10%.
The capacity for Long Island is 16, plus 10% gives 17.6 maximum aircaft can operate.

Apparently UV rounds this calculation down or doesn't round at all, as the Dauntlesses accrued zero fatigue and suffered no damage to any aircraft after several days.

I don't think they were even flying.

Drex -> (6/3/2003 8:21:39 AM)

Okay, I give up as an apologist for Long Island! She's just a fairy. So just send her back to Pearl for those precious reinforcement points and be glad you got her.

Bill_L. -> (6/4/2003 4:17:46 PM)

I've used the Long Island to transfer squadrons of P-39's and never had a problem flying them off when they were in range of New Caledonia.
