Please do not turn this into a political thread and get it locked. [&o] Also, fair warning, some images in the article may not be suitable for children if they happen to be around.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5677705/Russia-uses-armed-ROBOT-gun-battle-left-11-jihadists-dead.html

'Russian operatives used an armed robot in a gunfight that left 11 jihadists dead - as they try to stamp out extremism ahead of the World Cup.'

I think we all knew this was coming eventually as robotics and automation technologies have exploded over the past 20 years. Pretty scary stuff, even scarier if you find yourself on the business end of this thing.

Cue Sarah Connor jokes in three, two, ....

USSAmerica -> RE: Russians use Robot in Combat (5/1/2018 1:25:52 PM)

I don't know that this is such a significant step. It's remote controlled, not autonomous. All of the drones we, and many other nations, have been using for years are also remote controlled.

Chickenboy -> RE: Russians use Robot in Combat (5/1/2018 2:29:05 PM)

Agree with USS Mike. Armed remote control 'robots' have been used by years by different security forces around the globe. Drones are an iterative change above that too.

JReb -> RE: Russians use Robot in Combat (5/1/2018 2:48:44 PM)

I guess you guys are more up to date on the subject than I am. I just haven't heard of US forces sending in an armed robot to 'clean house' like that. I've heard about the drone strikes just nothing like this.

If you have a link to something similar from other armed forces, please post it. I would like to learn more about this.

TulliusDetritus -> RE: Russians use Robot in Combat (5/1/2018 4:00:15 PM)

Looks like a kid's toy to me. Exactly like drones: sophisticated kids' toys [:D]

These are robots, apparently.

Zorch -> RE: Russians use Robot in Combat (5/1/2018 4:15:59 PM)

It's all Robocop's fault. [:D]

PipFromSlitherine -> RE: Russians use Robot in Combat (5/1/2018 4:32:08 PM)

I read a great book on it once, though I forget the name, and likely well out of date already! But here is one example

Cheers

Here's an article on the Israeli Dogo:

And one in the NY Post about several US systems in development or actively deployed:

Thanks for the links. Very interesting reading. Do you know if the US has deployed any of these systems in combat yet? In Iraq maybe?

Capt. Harlock -> RE: Russians use Robot in Combat (5/4/2018 4:17:09 AM)

As the photo demonstrates, robots don't necessarily have to have humanoid shapes. Aren't "fire and forget" missiles basically kamikaze robots?

Kuokkanen -> RE: Russians use Robot in Combat (5/4/2018 2:50:28 PM)

Robot used in Second World War

Perturabo -> RE: Russians use Robot in Combat (5/5/2018 2:25:38 AM)

Extremely old news. Guided missiles are robots.

Dunno about purpose-built combat robots per se. They've been using bomb disposal robots for at least two decades. These are fitted with high pressure water cannons, TV cameras, etc. Really a simple alternative to put an MG on there instead.
