Hello I just want to confirm the the e-mail sent from Slitherine about GDPR was legit. I am very leery about receiving e-mails like the one I received today.

Aye its legit. The EU has passed a major improvement in data protection legislation and it affects any company that trades into the EU as well as those domiciled in the EU.

So Slitherine need to ensure that everyone on their mailing list has given consent to remaining on it

I received it too. Can't complain. They send few emails so fair enough. Appreciate the non spamming: they certainly understood it may backfire. The intelligent, elegant thing to do.
