Here are some documents that could be useful:

Military Terms and Symbols- https://armypubs.army.mil/epubs/DR_pubs/DR_a/pdf/web/ADRP%201-02%20FINAL%20WEB.pdf

Multiservice Brevity (Radio) Codes - https://fas.org/irp/doddir/army/fm1-02-1.pdf (only older versions of this document are available as the newer ones are restricted)

NimrodX,

Thanks for the "Brevity Code" reference. I've included it in CMANO's unofficial reference library.

As always, anyone who would like access to this Dropbox library please PM me with your email address and I'll add you to the list.

Also found this http://www.jcs.mil/Portals/36/Documents/Doctrine/pubs/dictionary.pdf but I'm not so sure it's any different than that US Army publication.

Here is a NATO symbol guide, this one is focused on input into a computer battle management DB so some may find it useful:

http://www.mapsymbs.com/APP-6ADRDCValcartierEdition121(Mod).pdf

On a cautionary note, the symbols change from time to time so you may need to correlate the date you are looking at to the symbol guide:

The NATO symbol manual is APP-6a...through 'd' I think which represent the various editions. '6a' was used up until the early '00s then we've had 3 versions in the past decade or so.

The US symbology changes faster and more often - every time a new piece of kit shows up it gets its own symbol which triggers a new edition - pita! The big changes lately are doctrine related, messing around with the symbols for mixed units.

Most symbology is land related though so doesn't have a huge impact on COMANO

Edit: Just found this - looks useful https://spatialillusions.com/unitgenerator/

NimrodX and Gunner98,

Thanks to both of you for the DOD Dictionary and Military Symbols references. I've added both of them to the reference library.

Any forum member who would like access to this Dropbox library please PM me with your email address and I'll put you on the list.

Thanks,

Thanks for that unit generator thing. That's kind of useful as a reference.

Since the game uses 16x16 symbols I haven't spent much time thinking about symbols since most of these NDTS/APP symbols have no hope of being legible at such low resolution, but I have thought of trying to edit the ones for installation and airbase because I think those two look too similar and I keep having to stare for a second to distinguish between them.

I'm not sure where that 3x3 grid symbol for installation comes from as I haven't seen it anywhere else. The NDTS/APP symbol seems to be the shape with a little black "hat" or "smokestack" sort of thing on top.
