Sykoticwit -> Steam Community Scenario Sandstorm I (5/23/2018 10:36:34 PM)

Hey...I put CMNAO down for a bit, but I recently picked it back up, and I'm having a bit of trouble with Sandstorm I, a steam community scenario.

For anyone familiar with the scenario, what's the best way to locate the TEL's? They don't radiate, so passive detection is out, I've tried using JSTARS, but that never seems to pick them up, I assume because they're not moving, the only way I've been able to reliably locate them is to have an F-35 overfly the site at about 12k. The issue then is that you're overflying some reasonably modern SAM's at 12k. I can get the TEL clusters closest to Iraq reliably, I use F-22/F35 combo's to kill off the SAM's, locate the TEL's and then use use a mix of JASSM's from some B2's and SDBII's from the fighters to finish off the TEL's, but I'm having difficulty with the ones near Qom. I can reliably sneak in 4 F-22 and 4 F-35's with SDBII's and 2 F-22's with AMRAAMS, but I can't suppress the air defenses, keep the Iranian fighters off of my strikers and locate and strike the TEL's before I start getting overwhelmed.

Anyone else tried this? How did you do it?

any U-2 / global hawk etc available?

reconnaissance is difficult without reconnaissance..

even a TGP would probably help.

You have a pair of RQ-180's available, but they're so slow you almost don't have time to wait for them. They top out at around 490k, and the farthest target is ~670miles away. My original idea was to use them for scouting the farthest target, then use the B2 JASSM's to hit them, but Iran got their missiles off before the drones got close. You have something like 2 hours before the Iranians start launching missiles.

I'm not familiar with this scenario, but if the TELs are undefended by MANPADS or other SHORAD/VSHORAD (very short range anti-air), you could try to overfly them at a very low altitude that is too low for most HIMAD (high-medium altitude) SAMs to hit.

Other than "don't get too low to the ground" I'm not really sure how to limit the effectiveness of MANPADs/(V)SHORAD other than maybe "go really fast", but I think even at gate (afterburner speed) MANPADs will still tend to kill you if they're not fired from too far away.

The thing to do might be try to fly somewhere in the overlap altitude zone between MANPADS and HIMAD SAMs. Then it will be easier to climb or dive to a safe(r) altitude depending on which is coming at you.
