DanTepX -> Newbie help (6/9/2001 3:16:00 AM)

Hi, I really like this game, and I've managed to figure lots out but I do have a question. What i want to do is to put my infantry in defend mode and then have the computer control them, so they shoot at things automatically so I can worry about other things, and save time. However whenever I do this, the computer controlled units will march away (towards victory locations?) even while in Defend mode and I think even when sitting on their little objective flag. Is the AI just being "smarter" than me? Well, anyways does anyone know how to make the AI controlled units sit still where I want them to be? Thanks. PS: This game is one of the best I've played! So many options, vehicles, everything! Anyone have reviews of the mega campaign? I'm considering buying it and info would be appreciated.

If you are using the editor to set up a scenario, then set a reaction turn for the troops. If you are just playing a battle, then I wouldn't set them under comp control unless you want them to do odd things. If just set in defend mode (C&C on) then they will opfire and special opfire at any close threats without taking them out of human control. By the time they are actively involved with the enemy, I don't know if you want to leave them under comp control. thanks, John.

Hi DanTepX Welcome aboard! Can you be a little more specific in what your trying to do? Are you creating a scenario, or just playing one and you want the computer to play part of your forces?

Welcome to SPWAW and the boards! If you are trying this in a scenario it probably won't work unless it is a "Assault-Defend" scenario with you as the defender. Most scenarios are set up with the AI as the defender since it defends better than it attacks. If you want to make a scenario and have your troops stay put there have been volumes written about this, in the manual and here in the forum. Use the "search" funtion to find things like "scenario design" and things like that. The MC is well worth it - over 100 scenarios linked together, and where you go depends on how well you do. Alot of the best SPWAW scenario designers, plus some new ones were invloved in this.

Thanks everyone for the info. My question deals with trying to get my guys to stay put during the actual fight, not designing anything. I'm playing the long WW2 campaign now. I didn't even know about all this scenario design stuff! Maybe after some practice, I'll design some scenarios myself.

I've never tried to do what you are doing, but I can tell you this - trying to get them to stay when you're designing a scenario can be very tough, and trying it where you have no control over Victory Hex placement would make it next to impossible, I would think. A unit under AI control will always go for a VH if it is close enough, and the stance won't matter much. The only thing I could suggest is going with fewer points to give you a force you can manage. The points given each side can be adjusted in "preferences".

Rick Borovec -> (6/10/2001 1:10:00 AM)

If I understand you correctly, you are just trying to have your infantry stay in one place and fire at the enemy if and when neccessary. You do not have to have the AI control them to do this. Put them into position, change stance to defend, set range that you want them to engage at, and leave them alone. Also set OP Fire to zero in preferances. They will only move if fired on and routed. They will engage the enemy if they come into sight and within range automatically. This should help you and battle on!
