I'm looking at setting up a AEW patrol, and my AEW aircraft all say that to use the AEW radar effectively for the plane to be at the optimum altitude. How can I find what Altitude that would be? Thanks and as always thanks for helping me.

If you're talking about the mention of 'optimum altitude' in the loadout description, it will be the altitude that your aircraft defaults to while on patrol. For jets this is usually 36,000ft or thereabouts, while with prop aircraft it will vary by airframe and engine. Helicopters generally default to 2,000ft.

In terms of optimum radar reach for AEW aircraft, the higher the better.

Edit: Here is a useful tool for calculating radar horizon from a given altitude.

I think the original poster needs to be more specific with regard to what they are trying to detect. I have found that small moving targets like single "terrorist" technical vehicles require the player to fly very low and slow over the target area to detect these low profile units even with modern sensors on board.
