obvert -> OT: Legends Air Show at Duxford, UK (7/16/2018 11:10:48 AM)

For the second year running I managed to get to the Legends show. This year I was excited to see P-47 and a P-38 in the lineup plus a B-25, all of which I'd never seen flying in person.

Unfortunately my good DSLR packed up just before this in Greece, so I was stuck with my iPhone trying to capture these as they shot past and soared up beyond my zooming abilities. Maybe it was better in the end, as I just watched adn enjoyed, mostly. I got to the flight line walk this year and got up close, which was fun too. The show wasn't as dynamic as the year before, and some displays a bit less inspired, but it was a great day out regardless.

There were 15 Spits this year (!!) plus four Hurris, four post-war Spanish (merlin powered[:(]) Bf-109s, and a few gems, including the little Wildcat II and the Bearcat. I saw the Bearcat last year, but somehow it stole the show for me this year (the wildcat was my fave last year, so maybe now I need to see a Hellcat!). The Bearcat was a beast!! It made the preceding corsairs look like they were a bit tired (although they looked monstrously powerful).

The P-47 wasn't that impressive, looking sluggish and paired escorting the Sally B B-17. I'd like to see that one go high! The P-38 was also less of a draw in the air, as it was tied to the Red Bull team show, but I did get some close views as I walked back to the train and it circled around the field.

The Sea Furys kick some butt. Those are monsters too.

Found this guy's video which gives a good idea of the day's events.

Legends Air Show 2018: Sunday video

The fly past of all of the fighters this year went right over me on the train station overpass as I walked to get the 5:42 to London. Perfect!! Much closer than I would have been at the field. [:)]

Very nice, thank you for the link!
What was the two engine British fighter that flew formation with the Spits? Beaufighter? Beaufort?

The was a Bristol Blenheim Mk I. Here is my pic of it from last year when I had my camera.

30 minutes well spent.

In OZ the warbirds are pulling back the hours in the air and the G limit to their manouvres due to their age.

The Blenheim I would be 80ish year sold, the youngest in the air probably the F4U's at just short of 70 years.

I'd rather see them doing straight and level runs than augering into the dirt keeping someone happy.

I still hope to get over there next year for that. I'll keep you posted.

Cheers,

(Or anyone else heading to the UK for some museum/airshow/ship visits).

Nice shot!

That was wonderful;

only some Jap planes were missing, for a comparison; but, anyhow, highly impressive

Duxford Legends is always fun. Been a while since I have been but in addition to the airshow the museums are top notch. Both the air museum and the armor/ground museum.

Also like Hendon a bunch.

IWM I used to really like but was back there earlier this year and felt it had been 'dumbed down'

Lived in London for about 7 years and try to get back about once a year.
