Israeli Turn 27..."The Massacre at Amir"

Cpt Shazly watched as the last of his 18 truck convoy exited the assault bridge. He climbed back in his vehicle and went to the head of the column. Once there, he turned right keeping the high bank of the canal to his right and headed south. His orders were to move to an area approx 500m south of the bridge and setup a defensive position to deny the enemy access to the bridge. He asked his commander "What enemy?" "Hq's says enemy "Raiding groups" were operating in the area and were believed to be heading towards the bridge to destroy it. Deploy your unit in front of the road using the canal to secure your right, and tie your left with the unit here." He pointed to a group of buildings that were at the road intersection on his map.

The terrain was mostly marsh, sand, and hardpack so the going was slow. There was a light fog hanging in the air making visibility only about 500m. Off to his left he saw a bright glow in the night sky and he heard the muffled sounds of what he thought was... tank cannon fire? As he approached the position where he would dismount his troops, he saw the burning hulks of bridging vehicles, SAM vehicles, APC's and tanks. "What "Raiding Party" can do this?" he asked himself. The last thing he saw was a bright flash off to his left front before he died...

Lt. Havanah's makeshift company of tanks, made up from survivors from the early fight at the Tirtur/Lexicon junction, were positioned along the canal bank about 1.5km's from Usha road. His force was the one that eliminated the Egyptian armor foray into the Matzmed area and now he was trading fire with various vehicles that were using the multitude of wrecks as cover. Between the smoke, fog, and fires, it was becoming tedious and they were wasting precious ammo.

He called the TC's of the two tanks from Mitzner's Bn and told them to hold their positions as he moved the rest of the tanks off to the east and north. He wanted to get around the wrecks to finish remaining enemy vehicles. As his tanks cleared the wrecks, a lone T62 was mixed in with some bridging vehicles. Then, just to the right, a column of trucks appeared. He ordered his force to open fire with white phosphorous and machineguns on the trucks while he took on the tank.

3 more tanks were spotted coming down what he believed to be Usha Road. In the ensuing 15 minutes, he stood in his TC's hatch as he watched as his tanks decimated the column. The tanks raked the vehicles as enemy soldiers tried to escape the killing ground...18 trucks, 5 tanks, 2 Bridge tanks, 2 Mobile Sam launchers, and an untold number of Egyptian soldiers....

Just to his east, the sound of massive tank cannon fire rocked the night. Multiple hits within the small village caused the Egyptians to panic and attempt to retreat. More Israeli tanks fired at the enemy tanks on the high ground to the east also causing mayham as more and more tanks were destroyed. Just to the south of this onslaught, erez's tanks pulled into reverse slope positions waiting for the Egyptian's to expose themselves at very close range....

Egyptian Turn 27.. The battle for Amir ...

The Egyptian commanders "on the ground" realize the importance of holding the Amir junction. Mulitudes of units are brought forth to form a defensive buffer to deny the Israeli's a path to "Their Bridge"

The rest of the enemy line continues to contract under Israeli pressure.

Israeli Turn 28....As the enemy continues to throw more units at Reshef's advance up Lexicon, Erez's forces guard his flank.

Reshef..."I'm taking heavy fire on my right flank from the high ground. Can you do something about that?"

Erez..."I have a Bn moving higher that should help. There are enemy tanks trying to push west behind you. I have a Bn engaging them now and they will also move higher."

Sharon listened to his Bde Cdr's transmissions. "Your attack has caused the enemy to direct his artillery elsewhere. It has dropped off considerably here. "How far have you gone?"

Reshef..."Yes, I know where its now falling. I'm at Usha/Lexicon. They don't want me here."

Sharon understood the meaning of both transmissions.....

bootlegger267 -> RE: Chinese Farm 1: "A Most Terrible Night" Narrative AAR (10/1/2018 11:04:01 AM)

My one MAJOR mistake in playing this out, and trying to stay "historical", was sending Brom's PT76's and the M113's across the canal early in the game and grabbing the VP hexes around Devesior. By doing so "tweaked the nose" of the AI. By not looking at the organizational chart prior to starting, and not seeing the "Alligators", Rafts, and all the engineering assets within the scenario, I basically screwed myself in regards to a "historical" crossing. It will be a bitch to get across using those assets if it is opposed operation.

Btw, I am playing this out using the AI set "Normal/Adaptive"

The AI's reaction to the threat/loss of "Amir" can be attributed to the fact that it is a 500VP hex, but the manner in which it is going about it is more interesting. It is throwing in forces that are in the immediate area, (close to Amir) but the enemy tanks to the east on the high ground are using that elevation advantage and are not "rushing to the hex" I can only imagine that the forces that keep showing up are from the Egyptian 21st Div that was to the north of the 16th, or from Egyptian forces that were positioned on "Missouri" that the Israeli's were very worried about...

Around "The Farm," the AI has used its armor to exploit weak spots to deny the Israeli's the use of Lexicon to anything but armor.

The only complaint (if you can even can it that) I had so far is that the Egyptian's have been able to engage at ranges greater than the visibility upon targets that have not fired. I know their IR capabilities, have been modeled into the game, but some units are suspect.

All said and told, I can't wait for the "updated" version of this scenario based upon the books mentioned within the ARR. (Spartan7)

What you are seeing here is probably the thing that LOS calculations are per hex, so a hex containing an IR capable unit allows other units in the hex to fire at those targets outside the Night LOS as well. Perhaps consider this in a manner that the IR equipped tank has fired tracers at the targets, for the other weapons teams to engage too.

I just discovered this thread. Love the narrative. Great job!

And thanks...

bootlegger267 -> RE: Chinese Farm 1: "A Most Terrible Night" Narrative AAR (10/2/2018 7:25:08 PM)

Egyptian Turn 28....Artillery fell in and around Amir, but for all its intensity, only 2 tanks were disabled. The amount of direct fire coming from the north, up Lexicon, had fallen off sharply. Reshef's tanks had destroyed so much equipment, it was becoming hard to maneuver among the buildings and the ground to the west. Some 60+ vehicles were burning, creating an eerie light that illuminated anything that got close.

To Rechef's south, Erez had 2 Bn's in a reverse slope defense blocking any attempts to cut Lexicon. Each time the Egyptian's attempted to get behind Reshef, they were met with heavy tank cannon fire.

Israeli Turn 29... Reshef's forces continue to consolidate their positions in and around Amir. His Bde, which is really a reinforced Bn, are ordered to take the Egyptian bridge.

To his south and east, Erezs' Bde has established an offensive blocking position that has pushed the enemy back onto the slopes of "Missouri"

Reshef to Sharon...I can hold Amir. Do you want me to advance for the bridge?"

Sharon...."Yes, it will give us options. I have the engineers preparing the bank here at Matzmed."

Reshef...Erez, your situation?"

Erez... Your flank and Lexicon are safe for now. I'm going to hold here where I am and wait for them."

Reshef...I may need forces to help."

Erez I have some in your area to the east I will tell them to go to Amir."

Reshef..."Yes, that will help"

Israeli Turn 30...An Israeli tank company systematically destroys or forces the retreat of the Egyptian armor northwest of Amir. Reshef's last element east of Lexicon moves to the west side as Erez's tanks finish setting up their reverse slope ambush.

Israeli Turn 31...Reshef's tanks continue their destruction of the Egyptian's around Amir and advance to the railroad/Usha junction.

Sharon, after receiving reports that the west bank is clear at the crossing point, brings the rafts and Alligators forward.

Ezer moves his forces out from the flares as the Egyptian's try to identify the source of their defeat...

Turn 32 cont...Southern Command was now at a turning point. With dawn approaching, the generals knew they had to make a decision regarding whether to allow Sharon to cross the Canal according to the "Stouthearted Men" plan, or to throw all their forces against the Egyptian's on the east bank and continue north from Amir and flank the enemy positions on Missouri.

Their problems were two fold. Sharon could not cross the canal if there was any enemy opposition on the west bank and the Roller Bridge was still kilometers away from Matzed.. They made one last call to Sharon...

Southern Command..."Erik, what is your status? We must make a decision here."

Sharon..."The engineers have prepped the crossing points. The "Alligators" and others are here. We've been hitting the opposite side with artillery from the past 2hrs. Reshef and Erez have taken Amir and are less than a kilometer from the Egyptian crossing site. I believe they have pulled any forces across from me to meet that threat."
"Tirtur and Akavish are open, but I can not wait for the bridge."

The generals in Southern Commands forward Hq's at Tasa looked at the situation map.
