Bashkire -> Unit Detection and Laser Designation - What am I Doing Wrong? (7/27/2018 1:50:42 PM)

Ladies and gentlemen,

I'm doing some experimenting with laser designation for a scenario I'm making, but despite my best efforts my recon units just don't see, nor lase, any targets.

My side set up is a simple "BLUFOR" vs "OPFOR"

BLUFOR has:
1x Inf Sec (SBS Recon Patrol [NVG])
1x Inf Plt (SAS Troop [Generic Laser Designator])
1x Inf Sec (COS Recon [Laser Designator])
1x Harrier GR.9 (With all sensors removed apart from TIALD 400 [TV Camera], TIALD 400 [IR Camera], and TIALD [Laser Designator].I suspect I can't remove those because it counts as part of one of the weapons. The loadout is 2x GBU-24E/B Paveway III GPS/LGB [BLU-109A/B]).

OPFOR has:
1x Armoured Plt (Challenger 2 MBT x4)

BLUFOR detects OPFOR as hostile.
OPFOR detects BLUFOR as neutral (this allows BLUFOR units to get as close as needed to detect the hostile units while not being destroyed).

Weather in the area is full with thick cloud to enforce laser designation by ground units.

The problem is that the tanks just aren't being detected by anything- to the point where I currently has my French COS Recon section 14 meters away from the tanks and they aren't seeing them. In the same way, the tanks aren't seeing the infantry. Neither unit is moving.

Since there is no designation happening, the Harrier can't engage the target, and it deliberately can't use its own designator due to the cloud.

What on Earth am I doing wrong?

The fog can be. The last setting parameters of the cloud layer, adds fog in addition to the clouds

Thanks mate, they're now spotting the targets (admittedly only from 0.3 - 0.5 miles away which is a little unnerving for a special forces recon element) but I still need to work on lasing. Do the ground units need anything specific? Each inf unit says it has a designator, but no target illumination lines seem to appear from them once a bomb is in flight.

Buddy illumination seems to work fine when using non-modified units. I've uploaded a scenario with a harrier that hasn't a illuminator on its own.

Buddy illumination can also be performed with cloud layers. (See savegame)

The game mechanic won't let it work with bearing only launches - the target has to be spotted and marked hostile (either manually or automatically). Ignoring the plotted course (in the doctrine) will allow the AI to take over for optimal weapon release point.

The relief is also important, anything that prevents direct view between the target and the Laser Designator reduces range, tries in a desert and flat area to see the max range.
