Any good books you could recommend for this ie Modern combat.....Fiction or Historical?
I wonder any good books covering the Ukraine conflict. I know not quite the same time period.

Team Yankee was a favourite of mine as I'm sure all have read it.
:)

One good book is Hugh Faringdon's (pseudonym of Christopher Duffy--famous for his books on 18th century warfare) Strategic Geography: NATO, the Warsaw Pact, and the Superpowers (1989), although it's sold at a hideously expensive price on most online bookstores. It's a well-written "tourist's guide" to the Central Region with balanced descriptions and analysis.

I also recommend Sir John Hackett's two classic titles The Third World War: August 1985 and The Third World War: The Untold Story--they're my preferred books under the "Western world wins" WW3 subgenre.

Yes, they almost read like textbooks. Well worth your time!

Great option and titles. I really like Team Yankee by Harold Coyle.

Also, Robert Leonhard's Art of maneuver is very good - although most examples are from WWII the ideas can be transferred to the game.

All the best,

“Soviet Blitzkrieg Theory” - p.h. Vigor

Chapter 14 A possible Soviet scenario for the perfect Blitzkrieg

Another good read is "The Offensive" by A.A. Sidorenko
https://www.amazon.com/Offensive-Soviet-View-Military-Thought/dp/B00AGMN1CQ

it is talking about Soviet military doctrine/mindset,so it is very boring to read. And after reading this book you might want to nuke everything on your FCRS map with 20kt warheads, :)

one more thing about Soviet Blitzkrieg Theory chapter 14 is the author discussed a sudden strike scenario. Without any warning, build up and mobilization Soviets start the offensive directly from their barracks in East Germany
the story of FCRS is also a sudden strike scenario. But the Soviets has some mobilization in advance, the deception plan fool NATO and made NATO thought they are withdrawing from East Germany.

Sir John Winthrop Hackett also mentioned Soviet Blitzkrieg Theory in his book The Third World War: August 1985, saying the sudden strike scenario is very unlikely to happen

A better work on Soviet surprise is "Catching NATO Unawares: Soviet Army Surprise and Deception Techniques" by Charles J. Dick, which can be found on the January 1986 issue of Jane's International Defense Review.

Red2112 -> RE: Reading list? (8/13/2018 5:27:40 PM)

From what I have been told, the first edition (1987) of Team Yankee is alot better then the revised second edition (2016) Seems that it has ALOT of typos and errors.

Some reviews...
