PhyseterCatodon -> [WAD] No SOSUS during "Beware the Badger" (8/1/2018 7:23:44 PM)

Hey everyone,

I've ran into a problem whilst playing the Northern Inferno scenario "Beware the Badger", namely that I cannot seem to get SOSUS to work. I've seen it work in other players' playthroughs, so I'm not sure why it isn't working for me. There are some threads of years ago that talk about this problem, but in those threads it's stated that the problem was fixed. Well, not for me apparently.[&:]

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Anyone? I cannot be the only person having this problem?
I'd really love to continue my Northern Inferno campaign and without SOSUS I can't stop my ships from being torpedoed to all hell.
I'd like to add my savefile, but I am not sure how to do that on this forum. (add file, I mean)

Hi PhyseterCatodon,

The SOSUS net has been degraded significantly (in the storyline) by Beware The Badger; the actual arrays present are only in the Denmark Strait and the Iceland-Faroes-Saxa Vord line. There have also been changes to the sonar model, including the addition of sonar-masking (i.e noise from other contacts can now mask submarines); so I suspect this is WAD although I am not the scenario designer.

To add a savefile you usually zip it and attach it to the forum post, however since you're a user with less than 10 posts the forum won't allow this. Instead you can send me a PM with it attached and I'll take a look.

Thanks for the help! I sent you a private message with the save file.

Just copying the PM here for context so anyone else searching can find it:

Hey apache85,

Thanks for the reply! I really do appreciate the help.

As far as I can tell, SOSUS doesn't work at all and doesn't pick up any contacts (no biologics either), despite there being a SOSUS Fixed Array right where my fleet starts!
Do you think this scenario was meant to be played without being able to use SOSUS for submarine detection? I have seen some videos on YouTube where SOSUS was working, so I am confused about this.

Anyhow, here is the link.

Thanks in advance!

Looking at the save file all the enemy submarines are currently 'masked' from the 3 SOSUS arrays by noisier contacts, be they shipping or otherwise. The sonar model has changed since this scenario was designed and released, which would explain seeing different results on YouTube videos etc.

So this is working as it should; the changes to the sonar model have made the way sonar works more realistic but have probably increased the difficulty a touch.

Some gameplay tips:
Make use of your shipborne and land-based ASW aircraft to screen your surface groups
Configure your formations to have good ASW ships 'sprint and drift' at or beyond the first convergence zone to detect enemy subs before they can get close to your high-value units (carriers etc)
The US amphibious taskgroup has some ships with pretty good sonar, if you're having lots of trouble I would recommend splitting off the ships with the best sonar and have them move ahead of the other groups to detect subs early
Take your time, you have 4 full days to get to the objectives. If you need to go slower or zig-zag your course to avoid subs, you have plenty of time to do so

Thanks a whole lot for clearing that up.

I gave the scenario another go and I finally managed to beat it, using some of the tips you gave me.
Especially taking the time to let the US amphibious taskgroup catch up and go in front made a huge difference. It always struck me as odd that the leading group had such terrible sonar platforms, but because I thought I was missing SOSUS I didn't start thinking of other solutions.

Thanks again!
