I was trying to send some sub chasers from LA to the Panama Canal, forgot to give them a merchant to escort (for fuel), and sent them back to San Diego.

When they come on map they are off Karachi?

That was a bit surprising (but I probably have more use for them in the Indian Ocean so I'm not complaining).

Any idea what happened?

I believe it is true that if you interfere with the destination of an off map TF, strange things can happen.

Right. Changing a destination after the TF is already in the holding box for transit is bad joss. Sometimes they go to 0,0 and stay there indefinitely.

Next time don't panic, just send a ship with lots of fuel down to the point where the TF will come on-map and refuel them when they arrive.

If they will run out before coming on map, they will either take fuel from another TF heading on-map (you do not get notice of this happening, other than the time to on-map arrival changing) or they will move at a hex a day and accumulate some system damage but should survive and arrive eventually.
