Dan,

It's an interesting question considering cmano is five years old now.

I also wonder where the Devs see the non pro version heading in the future.

I guess it ultimately depends on the developer's ongoing enthusiasm and the revenues generated. Microsoft might not support the programming platform forever. That's probably less of an issue. Games like Combat Mission have been around for 20 years. Tiller's stuff perhaps longer. He farmed out some of his code base a few years ago. The DoD work may get in the way somehow. The government has unlimited resources compared to the war gaming public. But I really think Command will be around for a long while.

I wager we'll see a replacement product someday.

I'd probably go back to cutting if the devs abandoned us.

Both WarfareSims and MatrixGames plan to support the Command series for years to come.

There are amazing things in Command's future.

I don't see them getting in the way. Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) is one of the buzzwords of defense acquisitions and Command definitely scratches that itch. My observation has been that Command PE is bigger than just the US DoD. There's other customers as well. If I had to speculate, I'd guess that eventually Command PE will probably evolve into "son-of-Command PE" and at some point a government organization will contract the guys to build the Command PE they really want from the ground up. That's just me guessing, though.

It's worth noting that TacView has made it professionally (used by the French Air Force) and it still actively developed for normal users.

My dear ExNusquam

He is talking about this:

http://www.tacview.net/

French Air Force uses it and it's still updated/developed for commercial/private users too. So, that is an example that military users do not necessarily kill product for private users.

Oh, OK ... thanks. I was completely in the dark on that one. Sorry.
