http://www.foxnews.com/us/2018/08/16/world-war-ii-era-submarine-flooded-by-vandals-in-new-jersey.html Pretty sick.

Yaab -> RE: Vandals sink USS Ling in N.J. (8/16/2018 5:10:48 PM)

Waterboard the vandals!

Uhm, could it be that they thought it was a Chinese sub? USS Ling may sound alien to some ignorant ears...

btd64 -> RE: Vandals sink USS Ling in N.J. (8/16/2018 5:19:26 PM)

Lock them in a diving bell with no air....GP

anarchyintheuk -> RE: Vandals sink USS Ling in N.J. (8/16/2018 6:22:47 PM)

So many people that need to be shot . . . so little time.

rockmedic109 -> RE: Vandals sink USS Ling in N.J. (8/16/2018 8:59:54 PM)

Strangle them with their own intestines is my first choice, but I kinda like the diving bell idea.

rustysi -> RE: Vandals sink USS Ling in N.J. (8/16/2018 9:48:06 PM)

Nothing is sacred anymore. I say when they're caught just turn them over to some vets. We'll come up with an appropriate punishment.[sm=innocent0009.gif]

spence -> RE: Vandals sink USS Ling in N.J. (8/17/2018 12:16:07 AM)

The diving bell idea with some help from "No Remorse" (Tom Clancy).

Take them down to 300 ft or so and bring them up to 20 ft or so quickly...explaining how disrespectful their conduct was. Depending on their degree of culpability take them down again...bring them up...take them down...rinse and repeat as necessary then bring them up slowly and let them go. I suppose that would be torture and illegal but it made me feel better.

(One could give a special one time bonus of one less "dunking" for any vandal that can name ALL the enemy belligerents during WW2)

LeeChard -> RE: Vandals sink USS Ling in N.J. (8/17/2018 2:09:17 PM)

No sense of history. I don't think it's a high priority in school anymore.

ericv -> RE: Vandals sink USS Ling in N.J. (8/17/2018 3:56:39 PM)

Even more disrespect was shown to ships sunk in the battle of the java sea...

Lokasenna -> RE: Vandals sink USS Ling in N.J. (8/17/2018 4:11:05 PM)

Guys, guys...

Yes, this is criminal and disrespectful behavior.

But we don't put people to death for being disrespectful.

No we don't. But it allows us to vent frustrations and occupy our minds thinking up "appropriate" poetic justice as an outlet for the sudden anger caused by such action knowing that in today's environment the perps will never be held accountable and will never have any idea why what they did would so deeply anger some people.

"The vandalism came as the group was planning to move the artifacts after being evicted from the site due to a nearby development project."

Cutting through the hull with blow torches sounds a little upscale from what some run of the mill street gang might be capable of. I sort of wonder if there was some sort of feud going on with the people wanting to do the development project. I mean, when big money is involved nasty stuff can happen too. Heck, maybe the developers have a few mafia connections.

Anyway, nothing is sacred. Money just makes it even less sacred.

I heard about this site some time ago, and had seen nothing of it 'til now. It seems that a group of under-funded well meaning people were trying to get things rolling. Now if it were as you speculate I would imagine that some sort of reasonable mutual agreement could have been reached without resorting to sinking an historic vessel. Let's not go starting conspiracy theories now.[:-] [:D]

Could be that the 'development project' controversy was a convenient cover for certain other groups with the time, know-how, and spite to wreck the Submarine and rob that plaque while they were at it.
To paraphrase one of the few rational voices on twitter: "Who hates the US military enough to send vets a ****-you?"
Not going to delve any further than that.

tocaff -> RE: Vandals sink USS Ling in N.J. (8/19/2018 6:21:22 PM)

A total lack of respect. The sub was always underfunded and with land development in the area a move was being forced. A sad story. Before moving to Brazil I got to visit the sub a few times as I lived in town for a while.

By water and fire. In Poland, you get mysterious, destructive fires starting in empty, old buildings in attractive lots, that can be developed. After the structure has burnt down, and rubble cleared, some developers start builiing a store or apartment blocks.

Dude...you'd continue to dunk dudes that forgot Romania and Finland as belligerents? [:-]

Saw an article on a place in (IIRC) New Jersey where a developer was a bit "proactive" in tearing down an old factory complex while there was a hold due to some litigation having to do with the building being a local tourist attraction due to the high quality graffiti on it. Some developers can be nasty when something is standing in their way.

Yaab -> RE: Vandals sink USS Ling in N.J. (8/22/2018 6:09:01 AM)

Guess the greedy devs decided the sub was lingering there for too long...

witpqs -> RE: Vandals sink USS Ling in N.J. (8/22/2018 6:11:20 PM)

I lived in Hoboken, NJ for several years. The first year or so I was there the market for people converting old, tiny apartments into condominiums was huge but rent control laws in the city got in the way. Just within close hearing (in other words: "within wake you up distance") it was amazing how many fires broke out in buildings the owners wished to convert. I can practically still hear the echos of super loud banging on doors, obviously the fire department waking people up to get them out in time. [:(]

fcooke -> RE: Vandals sink USS Ling in N.J. (8/23/2018 10:40:58 PM)

I still live in Hoboken (perhaps not for much longer - recently retired). There was a documentary decades ago about all the fires - I believe it was called 'delivered vacant' or something similar. Thankfully the fires have stopped but the over development continues. I think about 10 or so years ago there was discussion of bringing the Ling to Hoboken. Would have got a lot more traffic there and likely not end up in the sorry state she is in today......
