The diving bell idea with some help from "No Remorse" (Tom Clancy).

Take them down to 300 ft or so and bring them up to 20 ft or so quickly...explaining how disrespectful their conduct was. Depending on their degree of culpability take them down again...bring them up...take them down...rinse and repeat as necessary then bring them up slowly and let them go. I suppose that would be torture and illegal but it made me feel better.

(One could give a special one time bonus of one less "dunking" for any vandal that can name ALL the enemy belligerents during WW2)

No we don't. Cutting through the hull with blow torches sounds a little upscale from what some run of the mill street gang might be capable of. I sort of wonder if there was some sort of feud going on with the people wanting to do the development project. I mean, when big money is involved nasty stuff can happen too. Heck, maybe the developers have a few mafia connections.

Anyway, nothing is sacred. Money just makes it even less sacred.

I heard about this site some time ago, and had seen nothing of it 'til now. It seems that a group of under-funded well meaning people were trying to get things rolling. Now if it were as you speculate I would imagine that some sort of reasonable mutual agreement could have been reached without resorting to sinking an historic vessel. A total lack of respect. The sub was always underfunded and with land development in the area a move was being forced. A sad story. Before moving to Brazil I got to visit the sub a few times as I lived in town for a while.

By water and fire. In Poland, you get mysterious, destructive fires starting in empty, old buildings in attractive lots, that can be developed. After the structure has burnt down, and rubble cleared, some developers start builiing a store or apartment blocks.

Saw an article on a place in (IIRC) New Jersey where a developer was a bit "proactive" in tearing down an old factory complex while there was a hold due to some litigation having to do with the building being a local tourist attraction due to the high quality graffiti on it. Some developers can be nasty when something is standing in their way.

I lived in Hoboken, NJ for several years. The first year or so I was there the market for people converting old, tiny apartments into condominiums was huge but rent control laws in the city got in the way. Just within close hearing (in other words: "within wake you up distance") it was amazing how many fires broke out in buildings the owners wished to convert. I can practically still hear the echos of super loud banging on doors, obviously the fire department waking people up to get them out in time. [:(]

I still live in Hoboken (perhaps not for much longer - recently retired). There was a documentary decades ago about all the fires - I believe it was called 'delivered vacant' or something similar. Thankfully the fires have stopped but the over development continues. I think about 10 or so years ago there was discussion of bringing the Ling to Hoboken. Would have got a lot more traffic there and likely not end up in the sorry state she is in today......
