Hello again Gentleman. I've known this sub-forum to have an active discussion over various historical works on this war and others. That's why I've come here asking for a some help: I'm looking for a good book that describes that full history of the USS Indianapolis. I'm not just talking about one of the surely many books that describe the unfortunate circumstances of her loss and the ordeal of her survivors. I know that's going to be included, of course, but what I want to know is if their are any books that describe the ship's career in it's totality, possibly with an emphasis on her pre-war activities. A good example of this might be the book "Sweet Pea at war", about USS Portland. That one had various anecdotes and details about the ship's service in the years before the war. This is in part for a little project of mine. You might call it an alternate history story. I've tried to search things out on my own, but as I've found in the past, Amazon.com isn't much help for things that are somewhat more esoteric than the usual subjects (Found a lot of books that were clearly about her loss, not much mention of anything else). Your help would be much appreciated.

Doesn't the DoD keep a record of things like this? You know 'unit histories'. It may be dry with just a bunch of facts, but may be a good start.

Check Turner Publishing Company. They are based out of Paducah, Kentucky. Their phone number was (502) 443-0121. When working on my Masters Thesis, I purchased a history of the USS Pensacola. Had many other choices. Keep in mind that this is 20 years ago but it is a lead to start with. Good luck. Would be interested if they are still around.

One more reason to weigh all my options. Rusty- Closest thing to that I've checked out is the DANFS, but that's on the sparse side. I'd assume the Dod records take a little more effort or credentials to access, unless there's another official web database I'm not aware of
