Champagne -> Are there Soviet Off Board Factories? (9/14/2018 5:24:55 PM)

I'm playing against the Soviet AI in a Bitter End Grand Campaign. It is late May, 1943. I have advanced the Axis units to the Eastern board edge, with Chelyabinsk as the Northern point and Magnitogorsk as the Southern point of the Axis board edge points.

The Northern point of the line is just East of Leningrad. The Southern point is Rostov. I have not attacked any further South than Rostov.

My simple questions:

1) I assume that the Soviet has Off Board tank factories, because the AI currently has over 11,000 tanks! Can anyone explain why Soviet tank production remains high, even though so many of their factories are captured?

2) Must I garrison the board edge to prevent the AI from placing Soviet reinforcements there? Or may I hold the Northern and Southern board edge points and ignore the board edge hexes in between?

Thanks!

There are many offmap factories - and you can see them if you open the Soviet side in any scenario if you look through the production screen.

Thanks!

What about the board edge garrison that I asked about? Do you have any info on that?

Have to leave someone else to answer that - clearly in game terms if you are there you have certainly won already.

Note there are certain hexes around the board edge which are defined as permanent supply sources for the soviets - this includes Baku and a hex in Karelia. In theory if he Soviets have those they still have supply and a connection to the rest of the Soviet Union. There was a bug report on these forums by someone who had actually captured those permanent supply sources (I think) and was chasing up what the consequences were. As the game assumes you have won already it may not model very well what happens next.

I'm bored with the in-game situation right now BUT I am very curious to see whether the Soviet AI can invade the vacant board edge hexes with arriving reinforcements.

Hi there, Champagne!
I'm probably the one Telemecus was referring to re: clearing the map. Here's the link to the possible bug report I have posted:

You'll find a savegame there that may answer some questions regarding Soviets reappearing through the map edges - they don't...

As for the 11k tanks (and growing?) in your situation, there are many off-map factories that churn them out (historically, for instance Novosibirsk was a big hub for all war materiel production for the Soviet Union). And never forget the Lend Lease. How many of the 11k are Matildas and Shermans?

Is there a way for me to peek at the Soviet AI player in order to investigate? I'm not aware of this.

You can just play a game of yourself versus yourself - look at turn 1 of the Soviet go and you will have production screens describing how much you will get of each tank until the end of turn 224. It will be the same for every game using that same scenario.

Champagne!
For an idea of how Soviet tank roster looks you can check casualties report after a tank unit surrenders.
Or see by how many units of what your captured pool increased after a tank unit surrender. I assume you bag a certain percentage of what there was. Eg. if you bagged 2 T34s and 2 Shermans, I'd think the unit was composed of roughly 50-50 of the said models.

You know, it would be nice if you could evacuate on-board factories to those off-board locations.
