Welcome to the forum. I also had a graduated approach to this game through Pacific War, Uncommon Valor and WITP (I started it all with the Victory In the Pacific boardgame the neighbor kid had in junior high school). I knew a fair amount of Pacific War history before but I keep buying books on the topic. The missus thinks I love war more than her. "Not true, honey. Not true."

Cheers,
CB

Yeah, and useful, but if you're like the rest of us here it'll fall apart pretty soon.[8D]

Badges...err...I mean "Manuals?....We don't need no stinkin' manuals"!

For the record, I started immediately with a full campaign.

I hope it was an Allied campaign.

Starting with Japan is a road to frustration in my opinion. Much more to handle, and many decisions with long-term consequences that you are simply not aware of at the time.
When I started Japanese GC, I restarted several times after clocking some weeks on a previous game because I made some critical errors. Allies, on the other hand, can always gloss over the errors with the abundance of material. It can even be fun of its own

As the Japanese, the first turn takes me about 100 hours to complete. Yep, it's a bear, but the best bear you'll ever come across.

I got fed-up with the thousands of clicks necessary on turn 1 just to collect the hundreds of ships scattered all over the place. So I used the editor to create task forces at each port holding ships, assigned the ships at each port to the corresponding task force, and ordered the task forces to proceed to certain "collection points". Took a few hours of editor work, but now saves me many hours of 'clickfest' at each restart.

Sneaky, sneaky. [:-] Where's the fun in that? [:D]

Hello together, as a HOI/Decisive campaigns player, HOW do I start to "tacle" this monster of a game?

Any advice from seasoned players?Thank you!

Start grand campaign as Allies

Allocate 20-30 save slots for the first turn setup, so you dont have to redo the whole turn lest you forget to have issued some orders.

Give global orders first ( aigroups stand-down; turn repairs OFF)

Disband the airgroups which can give you extra PPs on first turn (some B-17s in SF, British airgroups in HK etc.)

Locate all your command HQs present on map ( the HQs that can give you up to 100% AV combat bonus). Analyze the map and see which important bases the HQs can start planning for ( Port Moresby, Pago-Pago, Changsha etc)

Start giving ship/air/LCU orders from the left part of the map to the right -This is the most TIME-CONSUMING part. DO NOT load any units on ships yet, because you cannot undo this order.

Spend PPs on immediate priorities i.e fighter air groups in PH have leaders with lousy AIR skill - replace the leaders lest the KB revisits Pearl Harbor on Dec 8.

Load units on ships

End the turn

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Create an EXCEL or MS WORD/LIBRE OFFICE text document so you can write all your orders down. You will thus create a MASTER CHECKLIST for turn 1, which you can reuse and upgrade with each restart.

Kull -> RE: How do I start? (9/21/2018 6:30:55 PM)

I started with the Aleutians,and highly recommend it. There's a limited number of things going on (air war in particular is barely there), so you have the opportunity to learn a few of the basics without having to swallow the entire elephant in one bite.

As for the Grand Campaign, we'd like to see you around here for a while so do NOT start as Japan. Do.not.do.it.

Start on a small scenario first. Coral Sea is a good one. And be patient, this game is HUGE compared to HOI [;)] And ask questions. This forum is great to new players trying to get the hang of it.

Yes, start with smaller Battle scenarios first.
I produced a Coral Sea (forces filled out), and Relief Of Wake Island - Dec 16 1941 (both play well against AI from either side, and are OOB Historically accurate) for this very purpose.
They can both played by simply downloading here.

They should be entertaining for an hour or so each, from both sides, have replay ability, and will help learn a lot of basics....

geofflambert -> RE: How do I start? (9/23/2018 1:41:16 AM)

kris, to tell you the truth, you should first pull your fingers away from the keyboard, then run in any direction that gets you away from it. Call the police to have them disarm your computer and remove any software from Matrix or Slitherin. They may have to use explosives. Then forget you ever heard of WITP-AE and try to have a normal life.

kris279 -> RE: How do I start? (9/23/2018 4:07:59 PM)

That is a lot of feedback . Sorry about my late reply, somehow the forum software does not leat me post(something about 10 posts in 7 days or so...must be a bug). Edit: I think it was the commerial at that I used to address individuals.....

geofflambert : Good advice, will ring them up ^^.

Big B : Thank you, will try that and see how it goes with that scenario

Kull : It seems the small scenarios are the way to go. For work/familyreasons I had no time yet to start, hope I can make some time free to finally "dig in".

Btw.: Had a look at your different "setups" - scary. Seems there is a LOT coming my way...

The idea to have a kind of checklist for the first turn makes sense. Will start to make notes anyway but to make that kind of CL you first need to understand the basics of the game I think.

Very alive and friendly forum. Thank you very much for that warm welcome!!! [:)]

kris279 -> RE: How do I start? (9/26/2018 10:39:15 PM)

Ok, this days I got finally time to start playing.

First issue I have is the resolution - I found something in the net to set it to 1920x1080 but it did not work. Looks the same as before. Second, the map is moving awefully slowly if I try to scroll with the mouse.

I used following line by rightclicking the desktop shortcut: -wd -pxf1920 -pyf1080 -archive -deepColor -multiaudio -dd_sw -altFont

Did nothing. And yes,I left one space in between. Any ideas? After watching some old "lets plays" I think I understood some basic ideas of the game, however, I would like to set the resultion right first.

rustysi -> RE: How do I start? (9/26/2018 10:45:34 PM)

Look at the 'switch thread' thread on this same page. If no help go to the Tech Support sub-forum, there are many threads there discussing the matter. I couldn't be any help with the switches as I'm in Win7 and don't use switches.

kris279 -> RE: How do I start? (9/26/2018 10:52:41 PM)

Thank you rustysi!

pws1225 -> RE: How do I start? (9/26/2018 10:58:58 PM)

Do as rustysi suggests and look at the other thread. You'll find several examples of resolution options and switch settings to get you game going in no time.

kris279 -> RE: How do I start? (9/26/2018 11:10:15 PM)

Yes, tried that already. Did not work(posted over there), really not getting where I should copy in this line. It seems it is not directly from the desktop icon. Don't have another way to start the game except going into the matrix folder, searching for the exe file and doubleclick it. Do I need to make a copy of the exe and put it on desktop? [&:]

Forgot how complicated this old games are(and where) to make them run properly. Still remember the autoexec.bat tinkering on the old DOS systems to make something run.....

Kull -> RE: How do I start? (9/26/2018 11:44:14 PM)

Create a shortcut on the desktop - that's where the switches go.

Or.....you could try loading it into High Memory. [;)]

kris279 -> RE: How do I start? (9/26/2018 11:57:15 PM)

Thanks Kull. Well, I tried various things. Nothing really does anything.

I modified the shortcut on the desktop - nothing.

I modified the quick start button in the pull down menu. Nothing.

It is the Original game downloaded from the matrix games website - Version One.Zero.Zero.One Zero Seven Nine from July Twenty Zero Nine (Sorry, but this a bit ridiculous forum software does not allow me to post numbers....)

I copy/pasted the entire line, then I read somewhere it should NOT be copy/pasted, so it typed it directly - nothing.

A not very promising start......

btd64 -> RE: How do I start? (9/27/2018 12:01:58 AM)

You need to upgrade to the latest version. Then the switches should work....GP

kris279 -> RE: How do I start? (9/27/2018 12:16:12 AM)

Ouch. I thought I got the last game for this price. Updater does not work(tells me to contact Matrix games)..... just great.

Seems auto update does not work. Which version do I need and where do I get it from. Or do I need to contact support?

btd64 -> RE: How do I start? (9/27/2018 12:31:22 AM)

Try rebooting your computer. Then go to the game and try updating again. If that doesn't work, reinstall the game, reboot and then try the updater. It will take time but be patient. Once finished with the updater,you should be able to make the new shortcut and setup switches....GP

kris279 -> RE: How do I start? (9/27/2018 12:54:16 AM)

No luck. Did as you said, reboot, nothing. De-install. Re-Install. Update - nothing. Thanks for your help btd64! Appreciated.

This nervs. Contacting support now. Let's see what they say. But leaving a 9 year old game unpatched on the servers for download is actually a bit of a dealbreaker for me.Especially with that steep pricetag they are asking for. Wasted 3 hours trying to get full screen...

MakeeLearn -> RE: How do I start? (9/27/2018 12:56:12 AM)

Check

You have to use a shortcut directly to the .exe

Target:
"C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -SingleCpuOrders -deepColor -dd_sw -altFont

NOT

Target:
"C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\autorun.exe" -SingleCpuOrders -deepColor -dd_sw -altFont

The number one mistake made.

I'm assuming that you did the reboot after the reinstall....GP

btd64 -> RE: How do I start? (9/27/2018 1:04:29 AM)

There are some files that need the reboot....GP

MakeeLearn -> RE: How do I start? (9/27/2018 1:46:12 AM)

The "WhatsNew.pdf" in the game folder lists the different switches that can be used.

Do not copy switches from "WhatsNew.pdf", because the "-" used by .pdf is not recognized by the game.

kris279 -> RE: How do I start? (9/27/2018 9:14:03 AM)

-btd64 - reboot? No? How? [:)]

-MakeeLearn Yes, at first I did copy them to be honest(was reading the "WhatsNew.pdf"). After reading the "switch" thread I typed it in by myself, first resolution only to see if that is working. Yes, always started a game to see if there is any difference. Did not work.

At the moment I am a sitting duck, waiting. Matrix support did not reply yet. But it seems it is an issue with an old version of the game(why do they not put an actually patched version there for download?)

Regarding actual version - found there is a download column with patches for Witp:AE. The lastest one is this from Mar 2015, Version 1.01.24 . Can I download that one or do I need to update the game patch by patch(as it was before with some older games)?´

EDIT: Downloaded last patch(from Dez 2014), in game version becomes (One. Seven . Eleven. Twentyfour)- sorry - software does not let me post "phone numbers" [>:]. Is this the actual version? Still, I made a copy of the exe file and dragged it onto the desktop. Modified to change resolution - nothing...... [&:][&:][&:][>:]

Lecivius -> RE: How do I start? (9/27/2018 1:00:58 PM)

A great link, with pictures, can be found at

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4409342&mpage=1&key=

Make sure you create a shortcut from the correct .exe. There are 2 of them.

kris279 -> RE: How do I start? (9/27/2018 3:51:55 PM)

-Lecivius

My god, this was it. I actually used the wrong .exe file(as they look similar I did not scroll down all the way in the Matrix Folder).
Now it is possible to modify.

Then I had a further issue with no response in game. More or less all the time I used it in Full screen mode in any resolution. It was unplayable. Changed it to Windowed(1920x1080) and it worked after I set that the windows toolbar would stay hidden(otherwise the map was covered by the toolbar).

I am using this line, I think it should do the job:

-dd_sw -w -px1920 -py1080 -altFont -deepColor -r

Thanks for all that advice!
