New moves from Ian and I'm taking a look around the map and I've found this horrid situation. Ian has forced his way through my lines and is making a huge hole and has units moving through it. I don't have much in the way of a reserve in this area: just one Panzer division and I'm not sure that's enough to contain this one.

This is Kiev looking south and you can see that there's hard fighting going on as the Germans struggle to contain the intruders. There's still a lot of weak spots and Ian will find them I'm sure. I'm going to have to move some of these troops northward to help out with the breakouts further north. I hope to be able to stem the flow for about another turn but my boys are slowly being pushed backward and the frong line is slowly moving to the west side of the river. This area was weakened slightly when I moved some of the artillery north to Smolensk. I'm trying not to use the engineers in the front lines because I'll need them to help my troops leap rivers to the west.

Here's the Crimea so far. I need to ship some more people down there pretty quickly because the Soviets are making the way through the bottlneck and the threat is that they will outflank my lines and surround everybody who can't escape to the north. The troops along the river will have to evacuate and leave a huge gap in the lines. I'm not at all sure I can reposition all those troops without losing a lot of them. I've got the zones of control disengagements turned on and the German units have a habit of getting stuck next to a Soviet unit when it tries to back out of the hex.

Soviet Turn 49....7th December 1941

After the exertions of the last turn the Soviets restrict this one to consolidating some of the advances and the SS Polizei Division is wiped out in totality just west of Narva and the Northern Front is now facing the new German line to the west north of a large lake. If this can be forced then the Baltic States could be opened up to liberation....

In the south the Romanian 4th Army continues to be hit hard and after isolating and destroying a German Regiment the advance from the Sevastapol peninsular continues and it is hoped to force a German pullback from the Melitopol lines.

Way in the north of Finland two German Divisions are now cut off south of Murmansk and in the South of the country a Finnish counter attack has managed to restore supply to some of the isolated border units but more Soviet troops are arriving in the area to hopefully clear the pockets of Finns still contained.

Finally, in the centre more advances occur in the drive towards Orsha in the centre as Soviet armour cripples two German Divisions before resting but as yet there is little sign of any concentrated German pull back.

Although the German air shock advantage finally went this turn most Soviet planes are rested. The Winter Offensive has yet to begin.

Thanks for explanation. Now I understand, I must have confused your thread with somebody's else. What you do is perfectly normal.

Just one last question: do you play in a free format or with restrains? By free format I mean both side behave at free will (so Russians are allowed not to be obliged to counterattack). I play with in restrained mode which for '41 means that Soviets cannot blow bridges unless in contact with enemy and that they have to actively defend (meaning they cannot just dig in and need to counterattack). For 44-45 it means the Germans are obliged to rugged defence.

No. We play unrestrained apart from the scenario briefing house rules.

The way you play is understandable but would be more like a reproduction of the war than I would like. Though superficially realistic you raise more problems. Why are the Germans not forbidden from retreating in line with Hitler's orders ?
Are the Germans forced to push large numbers of units into the Caucausus ?
We all have to balance how much we want to be constrained from trying our own strategies I guess.

As Larry says, we are both having a great time with this scenario so it works for us.

You misunderstood. Limited restrain applied. So in '41 Soviets cannot just simply retreat but must be a bit active (same for Germans in 44-45). An example of this approach is is having stack of 80 points on a bridge and enemy on the otherside. Historically (I mean in general not just on Eastern Front) you would attack the enemy holding the other side of bridge. While in boardgames you might be tempted to blow up the bridge immediately and just dig in. The restrain here being you need to try to fight. As I play against myself it's quite easy and I got it working perfectly fine. Soviets hold the defences but also counterattack just like normally any defenders in IIWW would do, so not like during the Napoleon's invasion. And yes in 44-45 Germans cannot withdraw in bulk but can establish defence lines behind the limited first line.

I apologize for this OT but I simply love FITE and already wasted like 400hrs on it and cannot stop :D

We certainly agree on how epic the scenario is ! There are often ongoing mini dramas the whole length of the front like the rate of Odessa or individual defence lines which really add to the drama.

If you are playing solo your approach makes much more sense and I am glad it works for you.

The Soviets are pushing slowly through my units in the north and I'm going to need a lot more people to contain the Soviets when they push through the bottleneck and enter the terrain beyond. I'm thinking of retreating all the way to the base of the peninsula because that will make the Soviet supply situation untenable. I'm probably going to have to round up all the spare units, MP's, Engineers, Security units, etc. and rail them up to the north to take up positions on the front line.

Here's what it looks like around Smolensk and you can see how the Soviets are leaping over the river neaded north and I've almost contained them. The Soviet units are strong and are pushing the Axis units backward slowly and I may have to evacuate the units north of here because of the threat of being outflanked and cut off. A lot of my aircraft are in reorg and in particular there's an Axis fighter unit within range of Soviet artillery that's getting gutted from bombardment. I've lost about a dozen planes so far. Ian has driven his Black Sea fleet into the ports at Odessa adding their guns to the defense. So I need to reposition my Stuka's down south and do some port attacks. I hesitate to do land attacks while the ships are there because of the horrendous losses that would result. I expect to lose a lot of Stuka's getting rid of those ships. I'll need to fly some additional fighters down south to escort the Stukas.

Here's what it looks like to the NE of Leningrad. The Finns are being pushed backward and surrounded and eventually they will be destroyed. There's not much the Finns can do except stretch it out as long as possible timewise. Supply levels are low here.

Soviet Turn 50.....10th December 1941

A counter attack by the Finns in southern Finland tries to relieve two pockets of Finnish units under seige. The Soviets destroy one isolated Regiment and bombard the second and the line holding the Finns just hangs on.

A breakout from the Odessa garrison to the south east pushes back a Romanian infantry Corps and there is further limited progress pushing out of the Crimean isthmus.

In the centre however, attempts to force through the German line further comes to an expensive end for now and concentrated artillery fire halts Soviet Infantry Divisions with heavy loss though south of Smolensk the trapped German 17th and 19th Divisions are subject to repeated assaults that almost eliminate all their heavy guns.

There are several attempts to destroy the elements of the Black sea Fleet at Odessa by German Stukas and although not totally successful damage is caused and so Soviet bombers resume airfield strikes to try and hit the JU87's before next turn.

I activate the Theatre Option for the Soviet Winter and next turn the Soviets will finally gain a shock advantage for 10 turns or so....not huge but hopefully will at least allow me to eliminate the pockets.

New moves from Ian. This is what's happening around Kiev looking north. The Soviets are pushing to get across the river and I'm trying to stop them. So far I've got this group contained and I've got an adequate reserve, a Panzer group, and lots of arty nearby. Ian has moved a lot of engineers to the front so I guess he's serious about getting across the river. The air war is still hot. I've lost 6 planes and Ian has lost about 30 and I just opened the turn and haven't started moving anything yet. I've decided that pulling back unilaterally would result in more casualties than it would be worth strategically so I'm going to try to hold what I've got and play it by ear. The SWO has officially started and the Soviet shock has gone to 115 compared to my 100. This should be interesting. I'm not sure any of my attacks would be profitable so I'm going into defensive mode for a while. I've been using a three-dot defensive dig in posture and it's been costing me troops and several of my divisions are gutted and I need to rail them to
Berlin for refit.

More Finn reinforcements arrived just in time to save the bacon of several units and have surrounded a small Soviet stack besides. I don't think the Finns aree strong enough to push the Soviets back across the river but they might be able to hold what they have for about 5 turns. There's no reserve and all the other Finn units are fully employed where they are and if the Soviets keep hammering at them they WILL fold. Supply for the Finns in this area isn't the greatest it's ever been. I'm repairing the rail along the coast on the east side and a trickle of supply might even reach the westmost Finns.

Soviet Turn 51......14th December 1941

After the Germans spent their turn digging in and lobbing their considerable heavy ordinance at the Soviet lines the Soviet attempt at pushing on with the Winter Offensive shock advantage is thwarted after a single combat round so most units will at least be rested for next turn.

In the action that was possible, in the North of Finland, the isolated German 19th Division was attacked and is now on the verge of being overrun south of Murmansk and the pocket containing the 17th and 23rd Divisions south of Smolensk is in a similar state with the Germans reduced to just a 20Km perimeter.

Armour and mechanised infantry from Odessa manage to push aside some Romanian Cavalry in the south and more airfield strikes hit the Romanian airforce to the west of the city.

It is to be hoped that next turn may bring greater rewards........

Narva is the scene of heavy fighting and every turn artillery duels and I've deployed the reserves for this area and I'm hoping I can hold onto this area because it will allow me to stop traffic with the least number of units. There's no problem with supply, that's one good thing. Ian got only a single combat round last turn so there was hardly a contest here but Ian is going to start pushing again this turn and I'm not at all sure I can contain him. I can probably find another division to rail up here to replace the reserve. The one good thing about being pushed backward is that the rails are already repaired and supply is usually better than the hex you left. I see that there's a supply unit up here and supply levels are so good that it's not needed up here and I need to move it to the south. I'm wondering if it would be useful for me to do direct attacks, air strikes, on Ian's rail repair units. The more of those I can kill the more the hassle will be for him to repair the rails when he advances. I haven't been dropping any of Ian's bridges because most of the time that means my bombers have to leave the umbrella of fighter support. Ian is flying fighter squadrons that have 100+ planes in them and they are deadly on unescorted bombers.

Soviet Turn 52....17th December 1941

Despite an instinct to hurl everything at the German front lines there has to be some housekeeping done first. After the Germans restricted themselves to heavy artillery bombardments during their turn the Soviets concentrate on eliminating surrounded pockets of German troops South of Smolensk and Finnish troops in both southern and northern Finland.

South of Murmansk the 19th Division is almost completely eliminated whilst a fortified regiment of the Finnish 6th Division is destroyed which removes a supply interruption in the area.

With of Smolensk despite a furious resistance the remnants of the German 17th and 23rd Divisions are finally eliminated and multiple Soviet formations released to other tasks in the area.

Aside from these developments activity is limited to sporadic artillery fire other than more successes in the air war and the sinking of a German Cruiser off Lenningrad by the US Dauntlesses after a battleship was sunk the previous turn.

Soviet Turn 53......21st December 1941

After another turn of bombardments from the Germans now well dug in, the Soviets launch a determined winter offensive concentrating on the Finnish theatre in the North but in particular in an attempt to smash through the German lines to the north of Lake Peipus. Units from 2nd Shock Army and 13th Army supported by artillery were engaged in furious fighting with the German 11th Division which was then reinforced by the reserve 19th Division Larry had kept cunningly behind the front line. After multiple assaults the Soviet attackers, despite heavy losses have managed to breach the German lines but have been unable to exploit the break as yet.

In northern Finland assaults on the surrounded 169th Division completely wiped it out including 85 embedded tanks whilst the 163rd Division just south of Murmansk was reduced to a shell and should be overrun next turn.

Down just east of Odessa further progress was made in pushing back the 4th Romanian Army whilst 3 more destroyers were sunk off Leningrad by US bombers.

Around Smolensk however the Soviets found that despite repeated attacks on the German lines, concentrated artillery support prevented any progress and for now the attacks have been halted until the heavy guns can be dealt with.....

New moves from Ian and during his turn he forced his way through my lines up north and moved a lot of units forward ready to lunge into the Axis backfield. I'm in deep dodo here and I'm going to have to rail some more units up here. I'm not sure I can get one or more units into the path of the Soviet advance but if I don't try something like that the Soviet units will surround, isoloate, and destroy the entire group. And to think that I had just got through moving the 2nd Panzer Division to be reserves elsewhere.

Here's the Smolensk area just now. The Soviets have pushed units across the river so my defensive problem changed. The fighting is heavy and artillery is killing troops by the squad. I've adopted a defensive posture globally because of the shock difference so it's Ian's troops that are pushing and shoving. Ian has been moving engineers up to the river so my exposure is going to increase and I'll have to replace the AT guns, engineer units, recon units, and other small units by infantry pretty quick else there will be a weak spot. There's lots of reserves for this area. I predict that this area will be stable for another few turns.

Soviet Turn 54.....24th December 1941

A bad turn for the Soviets. After more bombardments from the Germans the Soviets hoped to push on with more concerted attacks but it was not to be.

In the North the 163rd German Division was finally overrun South of Murmansk and disintegrated but West of Narva, the previous breakthrough was just plugged by AGN which gave ground slightly to the East to do so and after a single round of combat in which another German Infantry Regiment was badly mauled the turn finished with a failed proficiency check[:@].

This also stopped any further advances against the Romanians East of Odessa.

I have decided the unpromising nature of the central front with numerous Panzer Divisions and artillery concentrations behind the German river lines held by fresh infantry mean a redeployment of assets is underway ....

It is to be hoped more progress can be made in upcoming turns....

Soviet Turn 55

Now we are talking !

The weather goes into a very cold snap and lakes freeze over in the north. As another assault on the German lines is stopped by the unhelpful intervantion of large numbers of Panzer Grenadiers from 6th Panzer that Larry had placed in reserve I decide to launch Soviet forces west across Lake Peipus to outflank Germa positions to both the north and south of the Lake. Units arrive on the Western bank to find it largely unoccupied and both Pechovy and Mustrec are captured without opposition.

In the south the offensive against 4th Romanian Army is resumed with success pushing out from Odessa and another attempt is made to expand the Kiev bulge but ferocious Wehrmacht artillery bombardment prevents any breakthrough.

In Finland the frozen lakes help Soviet forces start to surround German lines near Murmansk and other Cavalry and recce units head south and west towards the Swedish border.

Off Leningrad the Kreigsmarine is much reduced as 5 more destroyers are sunk by the Americans who are however hit hard by German air defences.

Murmansk is as good as gone as the Soviets use the frozen rivers and lakes to get into my backfield and surround my units and now there's no escape for any of them. The Soviets will be marching south to Leningrad soon now and I'll have to displace all those troops at the stop line. Meanwhile, Lake Piepise froze over and Ian has driven his forces across the lake and his troops are taking up blocking positions with the intention to probably surround the group near Narva while other units head south. I had already committed the reserve to the fighting around Narva and so there's nobody sizeable nearby to form a light screen or some roadblocks. I'll have to rail some people up here to start building another MLR around Riga stretching SE along the river through Daugavpils and thense along the river going south. I'm going to try to hold what I have from the marshes looking south. The reason for that is it would cost more people than moving them would be so far. As soon as the Soviets start making breakthroughs down south...that would be the time to skedaddle.

I found the 18th Panzer Division down south not doing anything, sitting on the rails, and it was too much of a temptation not to move it north. So I disembarked everybody else still embarked and managed to entrain the entire division. Not much else will move by rail this turn however because the division took the lions share of the rail cap. I've got some MP's taking care of an infestation of partisans. They are going to attempt to kill both of them one at a time. I've got RR engineers on site ready to fix the rail. I'm expecting Ian to move a lot of units this way to take advantage of this breech and I'm wondering if I should drop some bridges leading into this area. I think maybe it might be a good idea to concentrate some fighters here just in case Ian lays on the CS and INT in this area. He would do something like that. If there were some way to get his naval units down here they would be here too. I've got my R&D folks working on a small tactical nuclear device for situations like this. They assure me they are making progress.

Good to hear from you, thanks for writing. Yeah, I'm working on my moves even as we speak and I'm about 80% done. The situation calls for me to pull units back in several sections of the front line and I'm having to plan ahead the movement(s) of the formations so that there aren't any traffic jams and the formation of huge stacks of units. Also, I've discovered the documentaries section of YouTube and I've been listening to videos of AI and Deep Learning and the possibility that human-quality AI might be the last thing mankind invents.

I've been expecting a strong push in the Kiev area and along the river looking south and so far the line is holding. The middle section is going to have to reposition to avoid getting cut off and destroyed. I'm backing up slowly trying to maintain a front line with no gaps and it's complicated.

I'm pulling the Panzers out of the front line so I can use them as a reserve. I need a reserve now more than ever.

I've got a couple of divisions that are gutted already and I'm thinking of railing them to Berlin or somewhere to refit. I have no idea about how quickly a unit can refit so I'll have to monitor it's progress.

I haven't reviewed the aircraft in a couple of turns so I have no idea how they are faring but the last time I looked I noticed that I'm running really low on bombers but that the number of fighters on hand is just fine. Most of the air battles we get into are sort of bloody and about 1/3 of my direct attacks receive some sort of Soviet response in the air. Your IL-4's are falling out of the sky.

I'm going to receive a new model of tank in turn 88 so that's a good thing. Your partisans are still a problem. I hope to someday retreat far enough to the west that partisans are no longer spawning in my backfield.

I can't tell if my INT is doing any good. I keep losing aircraft when they try to INT some Soviet unit not under my AS umbrella. I'm going to trim the range of the bombers so that's no longer a problem.

It's 02:42 local and I'm still going strong. I'm going to knock it off in a while and take a nap. Then about 04:00 I'll hit it again.

I've discovered that I can usually get one good attack from my units but that they turn yellow after that and can't shoot a second time. I've also been failing the force proficiency check fairly often and only get a single combat round.

The character of this game has changed remarkably. I've been finding units down south that I can rail up north to help out with the attempt to contain the Soviet breakthroughs. I've already used up the rail cap for this turn moving units north. I'm trying hard to keep my formations together. I've built a light screen in front of the Soviet units but the units are light and the Soviets are stacks of units so the light screen is going to get overrun right away I expect.

The front lines in the south seem stable for now but it's just a matter of time before there's a brushfire to put out. It's obvious to me that I'm outnumbered and it's only the river that's holding back most of the Soviet units and I have only a few units to fight. The further west Ian gets the more room he has for units to move into and the longer the front line gets and the harder it is to contain them. The thought to pull everybody back to the next river to the west keeps flickering in and out of my mind. I'm including the Axis minors in the front lines along with everybody else and backing them up with a few German units.

I keep finding arty units that have lost the majority of their tubes. They were probably ganged up on by Soviet arty in a duel and they lost. The Soviets are well known for the quantity of their arty. And my friend Ian is using them appropriately. I've decided to make this an open email because of the current game details above.

Soviet Turn 56.....31st December 1941

It is certainly a happy one for commanders on the Finnish Front as a determined push manages to split the Finnish defence line in the South between the 11th and 19th Divisions and also a little further east. In addition, in the north of Finland just West of the Stalin Canal the Finnish 5th Division with attached artillery and a couple of extra Manneheim Brigades is completely surrounded so hopefully can be destroyed during January.

Off Leningrad a sally out of port from the remnants of the Baltic Fleet combined with strikes from U.S. Dauntlesses sinks the remaining five destroyers that the Kreigsmarine had been using to bombard the Leningrad defence lines.

Further South there is evidence of small incremental retreats by German defenders along the line though no evident gaps have been left by Larry in a careful move west.

The one area of opportunity remains the chaotic situation West of the frozen lake Peipus. More Soviet troops cross the ice from North of Pskov and some German Infantry from the 18th Division sent to try and protect the route towards Lithuania and Latvia is cut off but Panzer reinforcements are arriving in the area.

Finally down South the main rail line into the Eastern Crimea is cut by Mechanized units driving East from the Odessa breakout and the Romanian airbase at Nickolaev is almost reached.

The Soviets broke out of my Odessa embargo and have made significant progress in the beginnings of isolating my Crimea group. I'm going to have to displace all the Crimea units before they get cut off and destroyed. The reserve for this area was moved closer to the front lines several turns ago and is thus out of position and useless for this situation. I can probably rail a division or two down here to help contain this breech. There's the threat of the Soviets moving to cover the exits from the Crimea and trap the 11th Army in the Crimea and destroy it at their leisure.
