It is possible to upgrade a fortification with AA defense up to level 5. Is this just a glitch?

Since fortifications can't be built in resource hexes (not to mention that resources can already be upgraded for AA), and since AA upgrades of resources do not protect the units occupying that resource, it seems the only remaining value might be a marginally higher chance of the attacking air receiving damage?

And to ask the question more directly, does upgrading the AA in a "built" fortification lower the damage received by units occupying the fortified hex?

It can be edited, you'd have to allow AA to be researched up to level 5, and also for fortifications to be upgraded that high.

AA upgrades do give some protection to units occupying resources and fortifications, it's something that was introduced (IIRC) earlier this year.

Hi Bill,
Could we have an example? Say a German army is bought up to AA tech 2. It then enters a resource hex that is bought up to AA tech 5. Does the defense of the hex add to the defense
of the army, or does it replace it? Or is there some other more complex relationship?
It seems like buying up AA tech past 2 is not really worth it, since you can only upgrade
units to 2, but the chits do not get any cheaper from 3-5, even though they have very little use.

I have found that AA levels of 5 in key locations does slow the amount of damage late-game allied strategic bombers do to resources. Getting to 5 AA in a resource costs 50 mpp EACH so I tend to wait until it becomes clear that I need to ramp up my AA. The allies still manage to reduce any resource they want to zero but this might take one or two extra missions. It also seems to cause a few extra losses to those strategic bomber. I have know idea weather AA causes extra losses to tactical air attacks against units stations in such a resource hex.

I'm glad to hear that AA in a hex helps a little to defend the units within. If the AA also increases TAC air losses this may start to look worthwhile.

Questions:

1. So if you have a ground unit upgraded to AA-2 in an engineer-built-fortification in clear terrain behind a river adjacent to an AA unit also upgraded to AA-2, do these work in concert to increase enemy TAC air losses?

2. If that fortification above has also been upgraded to AA-5 would this slow TAC air damage to the unit? And, would the AA-5 also increase losses to the TAC air attacking the hex? Or, is the hex based fortification limited to defending against Strategic attacks the hex, possibly slowing overflow damage to units occupying such a hex?

3. AA units normally only support against two adjacent attacks. Does the AA defense of a hex work passively to slow defending losses regardless of the number of air attacks?

4. Does a fortification, or resource hex, with AA upgraded also provide some protection for air units based in the hex, when they are attacked by fighters or tactical attacks? Or, would it just lower the chances of overflow damage from strategic attacks against the hex.
