mogami -> First Impressions. Working on Turn 1 as Japan (11/15/2018 6:40:12 AM)

Hi, Well after at least 12 years[X(] from my last game of WITP I downloaded AE at 5 am Wednesday and began working on a turn 1 as Japan for PBEM. At first sight the game is more imposing then I recall and some of the changes have a major influence on turn 1.
I now understand why Allied players do not remain dormant in China. The IJA is pretty must restricted to islands of control around cities. I would guess at least 75% of IJN units in China are unable to move.
The new port size restrictions really make you plan what you can send where. I love the midget subs. I had two penetrate and score hits on Dec 7. (although one failed to detonate) I bet I never see that again (getting off a shot, not failing to detonate)
I spent about 20 hours so far on the turn. Have not even looked at production yet. Happy to see there is no real turn 1 teleporting. (Although I never really exploited that except for games where exploiting it was the point)

I gave no orders for Allies. Also I just entered PW and then ended turn. I don't want to look at Allied deployments. (I hate games where the other player breaks out his slide rule for each and every operation. When I do play the Allies I will have to live with knowing more then I should but since you really can't exploit that other then in China (where I will be running north of the RR)
it won't matter too much.

500 PP to start 50 per day means Japan can change a division per month roughly provided they do not spend PP any where else.
China needs significant reinforcements or the enemy will just run rampant. I never try to win the war in China (it defies logic. If Japan could win in China then the rest of the war was unnecessary) However I do try to see (insist) that Chinese units stay north of MY RR
I have to see what kind of time table I can establish for the drive south.
I could just play the AI but then I would need to do all the orders over again for PBEM.

Well back to work. The subs I gave orders to barely moved. None of the TF I made or altered came any where near their objectives.
I don't think I even spotted POW and Repulse. (The major negative from a non historical turn 1 is these two monsters live to prowel the SRA. )
See you in a few days with trial #2
Over all I can see the amount of work and detail that changes AE from vanilla WITP

adarbrauner -> RE: First Impressions. Working on Turn 1 as Japan (11/15/2018 8:08:32 AM)

China army won't run rampart for some good years at least 'cause cannot afford the losses; it'll have even enough of its hard time to harbor a Japanese aggression even with Japan has on the map from day one only;

mogami -> RE: First Impressions. Working on Turn 1 as Japan (11/15/2018 9:24:37 AM)

Hi, Well if that is true then I am happy. When I play WITP/AE I do not want China to be the decisive theater . I would prefer it remain quiet. But I do not ignore the fact that allied bombers might appear. In fact that is the reason it ignites later. If you/allied player put strategic bombers in China and do not expect a very violent reaction from the Japanese you are mistaken. To put it simply, as Japan if you are not north of the RR I will drive you there. Let one bomber drop a bomb on my home island and I will go all out to prevent it happening again. Late war China is where I can mount an offensive. As Allied player I would strive to have bombers operating before the end of 1943. My problem is justifying Japanese offensives prior to this. I understand 20/20 I just don't think it warrants distracting from where I am fighting prior. But your intel is good to know. Turns already take too long to spend worrying over nothing

adarbrauner -> RE: First Impressions. Working on Turn 1 as Japan (11/15/2018 10:35:10 AM)

Just don't be misled please, China from 1944 on is a major concern; meaning, you may well find yourself deprived of any counter offensive allowance there because of the strive everywhere else by the Allies; usually many Japan players strive to take off China from the equation as soon as they can, or at least to gain the most advantageus positions on the ground;

a very quite China theater should be justified only to prop some decisive thrust elsewhere with the troops and resources deallocated from Chine itself;

what I mean sayin' , is that the allies won't let China left quite, and presumibly you ain't be left much to do then

PaxMondo -> RE: First Impressions. Working on Turn 1 as Japan (11/15/2018 11:37:03 AM)

Welcome back mogami!

If you want to, you'll need to go back 5 - 6 years in some AAR's. There were a couple, and I'm forgetting the authors now but it will come to me, where in early '44 the allies are able to get CHI on it's feet and running to Shanghai. With +20,000AV, and support from the Allied air (US Army Air), they cannot be stopped. Once the Home Isles are within B24 range, it is game over.

The counter to this allied strategy devised by the IJ players was to take CHI out of the game by '43.

The current allied strategy that I see being used is a late 44 or early '45 Hokkaido landing. This puts Home Isles within B17/B24 range which again creates a rapid ending. There is a great AAR ongoing now with this element in it with two of the better players …

mogami -> RE: First Impressions. Working on Turn 1 as Japan (11/15/2018 11:54:51 AM)

Hi, Thank You Pax Mondo I see that as a drastic failure in the game engine. I do not want to fight a fake war in the pacific as a land war in Asia. At the same time i do not want to limit my opponents. Many may miss my point. If on either side the war can be decided in China something is amiss. Are japanese players going to ignore the South Pacific and instead send the troops to China in 1942? I think reasonable alternatives can be arrived at. But it is too soon for me to decide

(I mean if I send everything to China in 1942 I can still take the SRA at a slower pace but win China so that they never bother me)

mogami -> RE: First Impressions. Working on Turn 1 as Japan (11/15/2018 12:00:02 PM)

Hi, I need an Allied player for PBEM. As Japan I am going to go all out in China. Can the allies win before China is destroyed if that is Japans Major aim? Japan still needs to take the SRA and set up a defense perimeter but time is no longer the main issue.

Doable;

just not to underestimate your opponent's capabilities;

see an ongoing AAR, Obvert (All) vs Lowpe (Jap);

BTW your plan would not be easy to implement under my own set of home rules according to which you need to expend PPs for every land and air unit shifting Hq (and they need to remain within the reasonable radius of competence of the referred to Hq).
Simply not enough PPs;

Simply sooo much more realistic, I think;

Competent Japan will crush China by mid-late 43 even against best possible Chinese play. Supplies run out and defences crumble. And Japan has to do it in PBEM because, as you rightly noted earlier, Allied bombers will always come. Delaying the action will only make Chinese stronger fixing their initial disablements, supply stocks and lack of forts. Dug in Chinese in x3 terrain are nasty in defence even with minimal supplies.

Are you still looking for an opponent? Like you I've been away from the game for a few years (5 1/2 on my end) but I got the itch again. I've been playing the AI for a couple weeks as practice for a new PBEM. In the original WITP I enjoyed the game in China more than most AFBs I think. I remember a couple of your Lunacy games too! While this is true, I don't think this has been fully explored. Meaning, I suspect that it is quite possible for the allies to exact such a cost on IJ for doing this that it essentially wins the war.
The whole key is to cost the IJ more supply than they can afford in the conquest. I'm not sure that this avenue has been fully explored as a viable strategy against IJ.

I bring this up as a caution for you mogami, as you are well aware the amount of supply that IJ has for the game is quite finite. Taking CHI out of the game costs a lot of supply. Could the allies tip the scale from "a lot" to too much? I should think yes, particularly if the IJ player doesn't have a supply budget for the campaign and monitor that budget … just saying … [;)]

I might be one of the few to disagree with the statement that "Competent Japan will crush China by mid-late 43 even against best possible Chinese play." I've played both sides extensively and have twice held onto China as an Allied player against very good Japanese players. It's obviously possible to take all of China, and I did that as Japan twice as well, but the first time it was my opponent's first AE campaign and although he is a good player, China just snow-balled on him after a while, he got demoralised, and he almost quit the game because of it.

The key to Allied defence is terrain and Stacking Limits. Get the good Corps into good x 2 or great x3 defensive terrain and stay there. Don't take the bait and move on Japanese positions. Don't leave anything in vulnerable clear hexes. If you run out of supply the Chinese can often still hold in these positions and as the IJA put more and more resources into China, take advantage elsewhere. Stacking Limits make it hard for the Japanese to fully take advantage of their superior forces by overstocking a hex without penalties.

I find China unrepresentational of the actual war but a very fun theatre to play from both sides. [;)]

There are strategic weaknesses in the game that do not allow the proper flexibility to reflect the political and supply issues with conquering all of China.

If the Chinese put up enough of a defense the Japanese can strategically bomb the Chinese factories into the ground rapidly destroying supply. If the Japanese take Burma the supply is cut off from the west.

In addition, the Chinese have absolutely no defense against tanks.

China can survive unconquered only if the Japanese player is inexperienced or does not make it a priority early in the game.

We all know some very competent and currently active players who hate Chinese theatre and sometimes land combat in general ;) China is special, and the existence of "quiet China" scenarios in WITP attest to it. Grind fest, supply and material sink, and an exercise in long-term strategic thinking. Yet, the theatre is so important that in my book Japanese Grand Campaign player deserves the "competent" label only if he can muddle through with no loss of enthusiasm.

Edit: I did some quick math - on-map Chinese LCUs equal >7k permanent VPs, not counting additional revivals in Chungking or replacements. Quite a haul to gladly pay supplies for

Mike Solli -> RE: First Impressions. Working on Turn 1 as Japan (11/16/2018 3:47:01 PM)

Hi Russ! Man, it's good to see you here! This game is MUCH different than the old WitP. And much better. I remember your way of playing. You'll do well with this game. Make sure you do an AAR though. It's helped me immensely.

I have been active in China in my PBEM. It's the end of November 1943 and I've been besieging Chungking for 4-5 months. I finally got the forts down to 0 so I hope to destroy the army there (~340k or so troops) in a couple of months. I have never reinforced the Japanese army in China, other than a single division and all the heavy artillery from Kwantung Army. It is possible to defeat China, but it definitely takes an investment in supply and replacements. Definitely an interesting strategic and tactical exercise.

Hi, People and especially to Mike Solli (he swore me into the guard and after a few years (9 or 10 but who counts) I retired and now get to play games full time (when I am not making stupid you tube videos laughing at flat earthers.)
I have began a game versus the computer to try and learn how to play. I don't think I would be much of a challenge to any one at present.

Have to see how long it takes for Amph TF to arrive at destinations. Really cannot make any plans before I know such minor details. I really wish there was one scenario where everything started in port. It makes me crazy trying to figure out what is already planned and what I can leave alone, what I want to change, and what I want to scrapp altogether. The autistic me hates splitting a large formation and having part going to South Pacific part to MAyla and part to where ever. I already see most of my PP will go to setting this straight. Well off to turn 2

Ack a midget sub is worth 3 VP[X(] won't be using them very much.
For some reason I sent 25th Army HQ to Pakhoi have to fix that.

mogami -> RE: First Impressions. Working on Turn 1 as Japan (11/17/2018 10:07:45 AM)

Hi, I am not really giving any orders. Just watching how far TF move. Also I learned that some ships cannot enter a port because they cannot go up the river (Saigon) Little things like this are nice to know in advance. I think it will take over a month to sort things out. Because Japan still has to conduct operations even though they could be better planned. Ships begin in ports they don't fit into. Everything has to be loaded/unloaded over the beach where a little planning could have rearranged things to fit. Whah

The Japanese seem to be missing more then half their para units. I found the 1st Raider Regt but not the 2nd (It was a division sized unit and both regt landed Palembang Feb 42 although there was not enough transport to land the entire unit at once. Where are the IJN paras?

1st, 2nd and 3rd Yokosuka SNLF were all Para units. I cannot locate them.

Morning Russ. You'll eventually get 3 or 4 IJA para regiments in the first year or so. More later. Check your reinforcements. For the IJN, pull up your land units and filter for IJN and infantry. In the left hand column, scan them for INFp or something like that. Those are your para units.

mogami -> RE: First Impressions. Working on Turn 1 as Japan (11/17/2018 1:18:30 PM)

Hi, Mike there should be 2 Regt IJA and 3 Special Air Landing Units IJN before feb 42 (when they actually jumped) and then you need time to move them and get their prep points up. Over 12k Japanese had been trained before the war began. Now transports is another matter. There were never enough to move everyone at once. And then there were 3 glider units.

Most of the time they don't really need prep against early Allied units.

Something that's essential to remember about the landing bonus too is that no troops need prep to land anywhere in the first months

1st and 3rd Yokosuka SNLF are at Kagi in Stock 1 scenario. 2nd Regt will arrive in Jan 42.
You can easily find available paras by looking on infantry units in "List all ground units" screen and sorting by type, they are INFp at the bottom

Hi, Dec 19th. It is like WITP in slow motion. Except for the Chinese they are moving all over the place. I am still unloading in Malaya and PI. The torpedo with the most hits but no explosion are my ariel torpedos. 2 Little Wildebeests in PI sank a ship every day till I sent Zeros after them and shot them down. Definitely cannot fly missions in SRA with unescorted bombers. But so far I am impressed indeed. [&o]

RangerJoe -> RE: First Impressions. Working on Turn 1 as Japan (11/18/2018 6:47:02 PM)

Welcome back. I am relatively new but I have looked at some of the old threads.

Remember, the manual has not been updated with the changes. I believe that someone started doing so (Alfred?, maybe) but only went so far and I don't know if it has been published.

I have basically only played allied and the computer always surrenders in 1943. Capturing Canton and Hong Kong with the Chinese by May 1942 does not help the Japs. Nor does pulling the units out of Malaya to Palembang help them either. Surrounding the Japs and destroying them on Luzon does not help them either. But then, the Japanese AI plays stupidly.

Here is a link to "Taking Singapore by Dec 31, 1941 with no shock attack "
