After going through each one, some I haven't seen, that I would like to see and most of them aren't that great. But there is one movie they miss, "The Grey". Directed by Joe Carnahan and Liam Neeson is the main actor in that movie.

I don't want to spoil it if someone haven't seen it, but truly saddest movie of all time as well, dunno why it was left out.

The ending of The Mist (2007) is sad. In fact I would say sad is an understatement. It's emotionally devastating.

From the top of my head, the list misses a lot of classic films like Vertigo, Ladri di Biciclette, The Hustler, Ace in the Hole, Midnight Cowboy, Age of Innocence, Sweet Smell of Success, Barry Lyndon, Amadeus, Missing, La Notte, Au Revoir les Enfants, Roma Cittŕ Aperta, La Bęte Humaine, Chinatown, Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf, Das Boot, Jean de Florette, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, etc....
Well it's a 100 list, we could easily create a 1000 one...

Indeed. I felt the same recently with Ladri di Biciclette... I felt utterly smashed.

Unfortunately the ending of this one is so far off from the book that it is a disappointment for me.

Trinity and Beyond. Why, well just think about it, it doesn't even cover all the nukes we have set off in the pursuit of stupid destruction.

Threads. Likely the best film to explain what will happen if we're ever dumb enough to use them.

No, you CAN'T find anything sadder than those two films.

Don't think I would call Das Boot ending sad. Severe and shocking, yes. But not sad.

And I'll repeat what the others have said about Ladri di Biciclette - to me, as a middle aged man, it's really quite devastating. Amazing film.

I guess, it depends how each one of us personally perceive what sadness is.
I too was surprised with some of the titles in the list. I never thought The 400 Blows as a sad movie.
Actually I saw yesterday one of the movies presented in the list... Her. I'm not sure if I call it sad.. but in a broader perspective we can see it that way.

Love Story at 45 and the non inclusion of The Great Santini is whats really sad.

I know Warspite1 would nominate Pearl Harbor as one of the saddest endings. When Danny died in Rafe's arms after announcing that he was now the father of Danny's child, it done tore us all up somethin' fierce.

Indeed. When I first saw the film I didn’t really notice the story - I was simply engrossed in the film’s meticulous (one could say almost obsessive) attention to historical detail. The en point direction of Michael Bey is beyond compare. But later, after watching this celluloid extravanganza a few more times, I began to appreciate too the quality of the storyline, the cleverly observed script and the acting tour de force that is Ben Affleck.

As for the scene in question, yes, its beautifully observed and is a real tear jerker. I don’t think I’ve been the same since.......

Lolz… I thought at first this was in a ‘best of’ order! Schindler’s List at only number 63!!! …. Ahem, then I realised the alphabetical pattern emerging….[:D]

Anyways, perhaps I need to watch more films as I have only seen less than a fifth of the films on that list 19/100.

There are some surprising omissions – Awakenings, Operation Daybreak, Toy Story 3 and The Book Thief would all get in based purely on the 19 films I’ve seen.

Of those I’ve seen my personal comments are:

UP – Agree. The opening 20 minutes or so of this film are cinematic gold (a box of tissues is advisable) and worth watching regardless of the merits of the rest of the film (which is very good but not Pixar's best).
Titanic – Really? Urgh – but certainly fits into the worst film of all time bracket - hideous on so many levels. At least the director stayed true to one of the important elements in film making. There has to be a lead character the audience can root for. Well I was certainly cheering for the iceberg. A Night to Remember was a far better film - sad too - a better candidate for this list.
Remains of the Day – not really a sad film, just unremittingly depressing
The Pianist – Agree I think
The Killing Fields - An excellent film, but a long time since I saw it and may fit into the Remains of the Day category.
The Elephant Man - Agree completely
The Deer Hunter – Mmmm, probably fits in the Remains of the Day camp
Terms of Endearment – Maybe - a long time since I saw this
Schindler's List – Agree – and also best film of all time - just an incredibly moving film. Top of this list.
Philadelphia – Agree. I have to walk out of the final scene at the wake where they show the video footage (with music by Neil Young), for fear of embarrassing myself….
Love Story – Maybe but a loooong time ago since I saw that. About the only thing I remember is that she called him Preppy, oh and she dies.
Legends of the Fall – Agree
Kramer vs Kramer – A good film but not that sad.
Gone With the Wind – See Kramer vs Kramer
Gallipoli – Agree and the final scene in this film has the same effect on me as that in Philadelphia . I always seem to get some dust in my eye at the same point in the film.....
Forrest Gump – Again a decent film but no more, and I wouldn’t class in this bracket
Dead Poets Society – Agree
American Beauty – See Kramer vs Kramer
All Quiet on the Western Front - Agree I think but saw a long time ago.

Also forgot The Hunter (Australian 2011), the last Tasmanian Tiger. Really sad to see this poor creature going extinct. Willem Dafoe play pretty good in that film.

Unfortunately the ending of this one is so far off from the book that it is a disappointment for me.


I like the short story. I read it when I was a kid but I would have to disagree. In my opinion the ending to the movie is much better than King's original ending.

+1 I didn't see the film, but I am still moved beyond words.

There should be an award for saddest film of the year.

I didn't review the list in its entirety, so maybe this one was on there. But the end of "Life is Beautiful" was as bittersweet as I've seen in a long time.
