DesertedFox -> Japanese R&D (11/27/2018 5:54:18 AM)

Hi guys,

Need some help on determining exactly what the headings do for R&D. I have read many threads about this but couldn't nail down an exact answer to my query.

R&D has three headings, Upgrade, Repair and Production.

Now I understand Repair allows the damaged research factions to come online.

But what exactly does Upgrade and Production mean for R&D?

What I want to know is which do I toggle off to STOP the R&D turning a production factory for that aircraft, because I want it to continue up the line researching?

Thx in advance.

Upgrade - Will stop factory from upgrading to the next model (once available) in the defined development chain. (e.g Ki-43-IIb factory with Upgrade = NO will still be producing Ki-43-IIb even when Ki-43-III is available and all other factories are auto/manually converted to that)
Upgrade only happens to Production factories, so no worry with R&D - they will be doing research till switched over to next model by user, or switched to Production factory.

Production = ON - will build "Research points" for the plane till switched to another model or to production factory. Will use up engines too if the pool is over 500 to speed up the research (size/30 + 1 engine could be consumed per day, even if it is 4E plane)
Production = OFF - will stop building "Research points" for the plane - but beware, engines will be consumed if available for the research! Quite unfortunate you are not able to stop this, but it is either WAD or minor BUG :)

If you want to switch R&D factory to another model you have to do it before it became Production factory (when playing with the specific settings allowing transition from Production to Research OFF). So you have to end up research before the current month (e.g. its 3/43, so plane arrival 4/43) and move to research factory to the next model.

Once in the current month, and 101% research is reached (seen several times research going to 100% and not flipping, but also not yet advancing air-frame), the factory will turn to production.

Thx for the clarification.

The R&D factory will "produce" research points regardless of whether the Production toggle is turned on or off. For Upgrade, it means will the factory upgrade to the next plane in the line when it becomes available (which really only applies to factories that are online and producing planes).

Essentially, "Upgrade" and "Production" mean nothing for R&D factories.

Thx Lokasenna.

True.

This however is false. If you have an R&D factory set to production it will go immediately to such once the aircraft is available, and you'll not be able to change it. OTOH if you have the production column set to 'no', guess what. It'll still go to production, but will be a different color over there and you have one turn to revert it to R&D or lose it to production permanently. Of course if you are playing non-realistic R&D it doesn't matter, you may do as you want in this mode of play.

Sorry, I meant that functionally it means nothing, as I never let factories go to production unless I always intended for them to go to production - once the R&D factory turns blue, unless the model is going to arrive in the current month (unlikely given that it would need to become 1 month away early in the month and I would have to have sufficient numbers of points per turn to advance it in the remaining days).... I always move the R&D factory along to the next in the chain.

I believe the rule is once that factory produces a single plane (or one day), you can't change it back to R&D. Really, you should just never be letting this happen in the first place unless you always intended that factory to move to production with that model.
