And just this function, sweeping before bombers arrive, is an art of basing faster planes and slower planes at different distances to the target. Just think of the decisions made setting your fighter sweeps. This expands exponentially with all the other force structure decisions, destinations, speeds, layers, altitudes -- all of them are being described and debated in 'Help Me' posts and within AARS. There is a lot to learn about the game and fortunately there is an active community willing to help you get there.
