So, the "Shattered Sword" came up, and the authors constantly drill the "spotting on deck" phrase. Now, is this real WWII jargon? Did they really say "spot this aircraft" instead of "position this aircraft"? As a non-native user of English, the "spot the aircraft" get mingled so easily with aircaft spotting by lookout and gun crews. Confusing, to say the least.

Yes, it's military terminology for arranging aircraft on the flight deck. I would assume "spotting" in this sense means putting them in their correct "spot" for take-off and landing operations.

Just look at this wiki link and search for "spot" and you can see the term is still used this way today:

Thanks! There was another ambigous phrase - "hug the deck"

Quote:
"Glide bombing was the worst of both worlds. It eschewed the slender advantage of hugging the deck, while accruing neither of the twin benefits gained from a high-angle attack–accuracy and near-invulnerability to return fire."

Is "hugging the deck" flying close to the sea level?

Yes.

Edit:Or ground level for that matter.

Yes, a phrase used to mean getting as close at possible to the floor. "Hugging the deck" is of course also used to describe sailors trying to get as close as possible to the "deck" or floor to avoid shrapnel, etc. when undergoing attack, such as in this photo.

Thanks! The "Shattered Sword" was great, but for those two phrases. And thank God for the internet, so I could find the animated demonstration of Thatch Weave.
