BKL -> Setting Patrol Arc (12/17/2018 3:14:02 AM)

Playing intro game of Battle of Coral Reef. Trying to set patrol ark and even if I set it for, say 180 degrees, the lines seem to only show a patrol area of about 90 degrees (approximately). Is the game automatically limiting the patrol area for some reason or am I doing something wrong? Thanks!

Not enough planes ready to fly. Start flogging your mechanics until their morale and productivity improves

So if I don’t set an arc it would then be wrong to assume the random patrol set by the AI would be anything better (ie, cover a full 360 degrees)? I also reduced the distance so it would be half of the planes flying radius but that didn’t seem to change anything. I would think if you are flying half as far out you could cover more degrees of an arc. Thoughts?

Also what do you mean by “flogging”. Thank you!

If you set no patrol arc the planes will cover 360 degrees over several days, it's just that you don't know where they're flying or when. Increase the percentage of planes flying the mission and the arc will increase. I usually use 50%; half working, half not; it's not a 9 to 5 job!

Flogging is beating with a stick, or other handy implement. It was a joke.

Most players don't set arcs, most of the time. The results are usually good. Make sure you have enough planes searching, get more squadrons there if need be, and make sure the commanders are decent. I sometimes use arcs for ASW if the opponent is predictable with placement.

Our Lizard expert friend speaks the basic premise.

Refined ARCs are okay however you have more important considerations first.

1) Total number of planes / squadrons searching is critical. More planes = higher success. Time in the search is better than "timing the search".

2) Pilot skill is critical - are they trained up to be effective ? In 1942 not so much but by 1943 perhaps more so.

Often early I set searches 60% / 30% / 10% - search / train / rest. As the skill increases - decrease the train. ASW seems to train much slower "in my opinion" but that is an anecdotal opinion - not necessarily fact.

3) Then refined ARCs may or may not be useful ( I have read many conflicting opinions from vets on this); I think that the first two are more critical

4) I tend only to use ARCs in very obvious locations.

West Coast - San Francisco, LA, San Diego, etc ... all ports along west coast. No need to search 'behind you'

Australia East Coast - Sydney, Brisbane etc... again why search behind you land based

India - Bombay, Karachi, Madras etc. ditto

I do not use Arcs for any Island base or even larger land mass such as New Guinea - the range often covers sea areas behind or nearby and it is important for coverage.

It depends on the size of your group on how much of an arc you may cover. When arcs are set the default setting for aircraft usage is 20%. If you have a good size group you can increase the % and get more coverage.

When you've done this you will see colored arcs. Green=phase one coverage (morning). Blue=phase two coverage (afternoon). Black=both covered.

It requires one plane to cover each 10 degree arc for one phase. Thus is you wish to cover a 180 degree arc for both phases you'll need a group with 36 ready A/C.

I recommend they are set. To do otherwise is just laziness IMHO. Its really only a one and done. Even when you rest a group it'll go back to the original arc when put back on 'duty'. The only thing you need watch for is the default percentage setting, which will be 20% once again. Easy to change.

bradfordkay -> RE: Setting Patrol Arc (12/18/2018 5:50:28 AM)

I prefer setting the arcs for my patrol (naval search) aircraft. For most bases, there is a definite "high threat" axis and I want to be sure that my aircraft are searching in the direction from which I believe that the enemy is coming. In very high threat areas I will have two squadrons reversing each others' search arcs: i.e., one set to search clockwise from 270 to 60 and the other counter-clockwise (anti-clockwise for those of you who speak the Queen's English) from 60 to 270. This means that all areas searched will be searched in both AM and PM air phases.

I would always set arcs for long range patrols from bases, and never set arcs for short-legged patrols like FP on ships. Shortlegs from bases are a coin toss. ASW guys always get their arcs

AcePylut -> RE: Setting Patrol Arc (12/18/2018 12:03:00 PM)

I set arcs on everything except when I use short legged early war bombers for asw duty.
