Lecivius -> Something for all you gronards (12/18/2018 1:28:03 PM)

I have pondered on this for a very long time. Every time I see a picture of the Shaw going up in the attack on Pearl Harbor, I see this scaffold. What is it, and what was it used for? It does not appear to be a crane, and it is far to substantial to be temporary. Anyone know?

Gimli: Nothing, it's just a bunch of clouds!

It's a gantry crane, a common type of crane used in shipyards and loading docks. They're similar to a bridge crane you might see in a warehouse. The difference is that the entire structure of a gantry crane usually moves since the tracks/wheels are at the BOTTOM of the structure, whereas on a bridge crane only the top 'bridge' portion moves along with a sliding hoist system (i.e. the wheels/tracks are on the top part of the fixed structure, commonly I-beams).

Almost certainly the gantry crane above. Shaw was in drydock on Dec 7th.

I didn't even think of that. Thanks!

That one photo encompasses quite a bit of destruction.

The Shaw was in floating dry dock YFD-2 when she was damaged, burned (along with the drydock) and finally exploded at the time the photo was taken. The gantry crane serviced the dry docks ashore. In the photo the crane is being partially obscured by smoke from the burning Cassin and Downes in Dry Dock No. 1. On the right of the photo is the still smoking bow and forward turrets of the Nevada, deliberately grounded after being damaged by dive bombers while underway.

A picture of USS Shaw after the attack. The dry dock (YFD-2) has sunk, and there is a good view of part of the gantry crane to the left.

The dry dock in better times:

I would have guessed this from the first picture. Your last picture has the support scaffolding in the center, same as in this picture of the Shaw going up. It is the scaffolding in the center that was throwing off my tired, old brain [;)]

I suppose if the attack happened today you might wanna call Geico.

Thanks Lecivius, now I'm never NOT going to notice that when I see this picture.
