Turn 2 as Soviet. All is panic. The sheer speed of the Axis onslaught is amazing. The usual Mech Corps, poor as the may be, has always been able to do a fighting retreat in the south. Now they simply get caught and destroyed out of supply with all equipment lost. Especially the 22nd Mech at Rovno, was a pain, as it was pinned down, out of supply and destroyed, opening the road to Kiev, capturing the bridge at Goshcha intact. Lead elements of the German 9 Panzer division reached Korets at 212,385. Half way to Kiev in 2 turns. Center front is no better. The usual infantry divisions, that in the earlier games, were able to slow the Germans down, shared the same fate as the Mech corps in the south. The German 7th Panzer division lead elements reached the suburbs of Kiev on turn 2. At 214, 322. Also capturing Molodechino with the bridge intact at 211,317. The North west front was 90% destroyed on turn1. Leaving only the units in Riga to defend it. On turn 2 they were destroyed, and nothing remains of that entire front except 8th Army HQ, and 27th Army HQ and 2 AA battalions. All reorganizing and therefor I am having no illusions that they will survive turn 3. Yet, there is no clear indication as to where the Germans will ty to strike. Leningrad is closest and will release the otherwise isolated Finns. So main defense effort is here until the German plan becomes clear. The changes in the Finland surrender options is likely to make it a more historical game, as the negative impact of trying to take out Finland before 1943 is too great. That is the only argument for not going for Leningrad as the Germans. That and of cause the costal artillery that will surly take a heavy bite out of the German units. The Neva line will be fully manned with PVO, Fortified Regions, artillery and all reserve armies. Hopefully this will be enough to stop or deter the Axis. No doubt the capture of Sevastopol in 1941, and the release of the Bulgarians is a valued target as well. So main south defense is put here. The prize over them all is of cause Moscow. A factory that can’t be moved, and major reinforcement point. However, it’s a long way to Moscow. Should be plenty of time to react if this is his plan. Turn 3 will see the Soviet shock returning to 100. That will help. Taking a peak into the future, the Axis ZOC will return on turn 4 to 50% however low it is, will hinder movement. Turn 4 is also a major reinforcement round, that will indeed be needed. Rail damage will return on turn 4. To be continued.
