Turn 16. Mar/Apr 1942. Axis #2.

Japan. Land Combat. Chinese Nationalist. A victory for the IJA turning the southern flank of the Nationalist Chinese in the south.

Turn 16. Mar/Apr 1942. Axis #2.

Euro-Axis. The Eastern Front. Ground Strike (1/5). The first of five designated ground strikes by the Euro-Axis goes well and leads to the overrun of the two surrounded (i.e., OOS) and now disorganized mot armies.

Turn 16. Mar/Apr 1942. Axis #2.

Euro-Axis. The Eastern Front. Ground Strike (2/5). The second attempted ground strike by the Euro-axis is a disaster. The axis lose an Italian fighter group, aircrew and a Stuka bomber group. The Soviet fighter group that intercepted is forced to abort only after all the damage is done.

Turn 16. Mar/Apr 1942. Axis #2.

Euro-Axis. The Eastern Front. Ground Strike (3/5). The third attempted ground strike sees an out classed Red Army fighter group force the escorting Luftwaffe fighter group to turn back (i.e., abort). The German Stuka bomber group never the less pushes on and gets through. However, all their bombs fall wide of the mark.

Turn 16. Mar/Apr 1942. Axis #2.

Euro-Axis. The Eastern Front. Ground Strike (4/5). Another out classed Red Army fighter group again gets the jump on the Luftwaffe and forces the attacking German fighter/bomber group to abort their mission.

Turn 16. Mar/Apr 1942. Axis #2.

Euro-Axis. The Eastern Front. Ground Strike (5/5). Wow a theme plays out in this series of ground strikes by the Euro-Axis. A third outclassed Soviet fighter ground forces the attacking Italian bomber group to turn back (i.e., abort). The Red fighters definitely won that series.

rkr1958 -> RE: Witness to World War 2. (3/22/2019 1:47:08 AM)

Turn 16. Mar/Apr 1942. Axis #2.

Euro-Axis. The Eastern Front. Land Combat. A German tank army pushes on with their attack even though the Luftwaffe failed to successfully ground strike any of the units in the target hex. But before the land combat takes play another air to air battle between the Luftwaffe and the Red Air force takes place over the target hex. In a reversal from the ground strikes the Luftwaffe wins the air battle getting their bombers through and not allow any Soviet bombers to get through. Also, the Luftwaffe managed to down a Soviet bomber group.

However, a Soviet artillery division lends it's support to the defenders as does a Soviet HQ-I. The end result is that the combined Wehrmacht/SS tank attack is stopped cold when the Germans "roll a 4".

rkr1958 -> RE: Witness to World War 2. (3/22/2019 1:52:39 AM)

Turn 16. Mar/Apr 1942. Allied #3.

Weather. There was only a 10% that the fine weather would continue in the arctic (a good part of the Eastern Front) and a 30% chance that it would continue in the north temperate (rest of the Eastern Front). A major reason Germany's aggressive last impulse on that front.

With this weather most likely stopping things on the Eastern Front, this will be a good turn for the Euro-axis to take navals and/or combines. With that in mind, Great Britain will (most likely) take a naval to get their ASW escorts and patrols set.

rkr1958 -> RE: Witness to World War 2. (3/22/2019 9:32:03 PM)

Turn 16. Mar/Apr 1942. Allied #3.

Actions. Free France - naval, Great Britain - naval, USA -combine, China - land, USSR - land.

USSR. Rail.

1. The Soviets dismantled their second blue factory in Moscow and use 2 of their 3 rail moves to rail the factory east to Novoisibirsk.

2. The last Soviet rail move is used to rail a artillery division in Vladivostok west to Irkutsk. The Soviets may need to deploy a "weak" garrison to region in order to get their garrison ratio with the Japanese back up.

rkr1958 -> RE: Witness to World War 2. (3/22/2019 9:33:55 PM)

Turn 16. Mar/Apr 1942. Allied #3.

USSR. The Eastern Front. "Colonel Weather" is making a big contribution to the Soviet defense. Too bad he's going on leave over the next two, or even three, turns.

rkr1958 -> RE: Witness to World War 2. (3/22/2019 9:51:02 PM)

Turn 16. Mar/Apr 1942. Allied #3.

USSR. The Arctic Front. This front has remain static since the opening stages of Barbarossa at which time the Finns cut the rail line between Murmansk and the rest of the Soviet Union. Every since the Finns have kept the rail line cut and as long as they do the maximum Lend Lease that the allies can give to the Soviet Union through Murmansk is 1 BP per turn.

The only other objective for the Finns on the front is to maintain control of the RP at Petsamo and ensure that it reaches a German factory. As long as these two objectives are meant, and with the Soviets lacking the resources and troops to change the situation, it's expected that this front will remain static for the foreseeable future.

Turn 16. Mar/Apr 1942. Allied #3.

RAF. Strategic Bombing. German Oil. RAF long range bombers knock out a German oil point for a turn.

Turn 16. Mar/Apr 1942. Allied #3.

RN. Port Strike. La Spezia, Italy. The RN manages to sink 1 of the 2 remaining Italian CP's. All that remains undamaged of the once mighty Italian navy is one lone CP, which the Italians are likely to (try to) use to restore supply back to the axis forces on Sicily.

rkr1958 -> RE: Witness to World War 2. (3/22/2019 10:02:30 PM)

Turn 16. Mar/Apr 1942. Allied #3.

Great Britain. German and Italian Threat Assessment to Allied Convoys.

With 7 German u-boat flotillas and the battleship Bismarck based in Brest and 2 Italian sub flotilla in based in Bordeaux, the threat posed to allied convoys (i.e., greater threat number) in most of the threaten sea areas is capped by (i.e., equal to) the number of Great Britain (and French) CP's in each of those sea areas. Nevertheless, the "Greater Threat Number" is still a valuable tool for allocating RN ships and planes to ASW escorts and patrols.

However, a competing priority for those resources, which is drawing away significantly from RN resources available for ASW, are the RN operations off the Italian Coast in support of the British 8th Army in Sicily.

rkr1958 -> RE: Witness to World War 2. (3/22/2019 10:05:14 PM)

Turn 16. Mar/Apr 1942. Allied #3.

RN. Bay of Biscay. The RN again fails to find the obsolete German Battleship whose presence will allow the Bismark to make the 4-box of the Bay of Biscay.

rkr1958 -> RE: Witness to World War 2. (3/22/2019 10:10:01 PM)

Turn 16. Mar/Apr 1942. Allied #3.

RN. French Navy. Off the Italian Coast. Great Britain forms up an invasion force, for the second time this turn, off the Italian Coast. This force consists of the Royal marines, Mar Eng division, 43rd mot division and 10th mech division. The only problem, and it's significant, is that there's not much bombardment support available from the RN because of their massive shelling of Palermo earlier in the turn, which was completely necessary. So care must be taken as to how, or even whether or not this second invasion force will be applied this turn.

Turn 16. Mar/Apr 1942. Allied #3.

Great Britain. RN & Artillery Ground Strikes.

Great Britain. HQ Reorg.Gort is used to reorganize the British artillery division for a possible second go at a number of the out of supply axis units on Sicily.

Turn 16. Mar/Apr 1942. Axis #5.

Actions. Japan - naval, Germany - naval, Italy - naval. This is one of those rare impulses, the first of this game, where all three axis powers take a naval.

IJN. Japan took her naval to re-position ships, subs and divisions for future operations when they become necessary. Anyone care to guess what that may be? [:)]
