The game is limited to two players? Is it reasonably possible to add the ability to have more? A global game like this kind of begs for more than two players.

You can, if you want to swap the save file around from ally to ally. Which apparently opens the door for stealth replays if you get unfavorable combat results. Note we've been asking for this feature for more than 10 years now...
