miker42 -> Naval Only Scenarios? (1/11/2019 2:35:52 PM)

IS it possible to create Naval only Scenarios in TOW IV? Recreating Avalon Hill's Bismarck would be my dream computer game.

There are five small carrier battle scenarios in the Asia WWII section. They are Battle of Eastern Solomons, Battle of Leyte Gulf, Battle of Santa Cruz Islands, Coral Sea 1942 and Operation MI.

The PO versions were uploaded and can be found in the Recent Scenario Submissions of the Mods and Scenarios section.

They are good scenarios to learn how the naval rules work. Most of the ground units have only minor or no meaningful role in the scenarios. They are carrier vs carrier battles with plenty of surface ships as well. I am the scenario designer.

I'd like to point out that Thomas and I playtested each of these scenarios and not all of them are balanced and they weren't supposed to be. They are historical what-if's IMHO Also, I never won a game against Thomas, that I would remember.

Playing them against a real person is a different game than playing against the PO by the way. If you can't win playing against the PO then try it against a person and maybe you'll have a much better game. People aren't logical sometimes.
It makes a difference.

Sorry for going off topic here but I'm struggling to figure out how to do carrier ops so far. Just starting with the Midway scenario and the first time I played it I managed to get Yorktown to attack by manually ordering a strike on Akagi with each air unit. Enterprise and Hornet also attacked without me giving them any orders?! So I replayed it and put all air units on Sea Interdiction to see if they would attack on their own. Nope, nothing happened. Is there a good naval tutorial somewhere that covers launching air strikes? Thanks.

Look at Curtis Lemay's naval thread in the War Room sub-forum. It's a start for the info you want.
Has a section sea interdiction.

If you have the Air Assistant ON it will carry out missions, such as the Enterprise and Hornet attacks you mentioned above.

OK, thanks! Will check out the war room. Must be the Air Assistant was on the first time I played Midway. I don't remember changing anything the second time and the strikes did not launch on their own so maybe I turned it off somehow.

Second time you had changed the mission for those units to interdiction. The Air Assistant honored that, I guess. Do some more experimentation with missions.

OK, I thought interdiction was how to make air attacks on ships happen automatically if they were in range. Time to go back and RTFM some more too I guess. :)

I have an AAR of my Midway scenario here:

I have a number of "naval only" scenarios:

Jutland 1916
Denmark Strait 1941 (Hood vs. Bismarck)
Pearl Harbor 1941
Midway 1942
Savo Island 1942
Cape Esperance 1942

And I may create a few more when time allows.

Yup I found that, thanks. I figured out how to launch air strikes manually on the Japanese and sunk Akagi, Kaga, and Soryu or so I thought. Somehow Hornet was sunk so it was either torpedoed or it was air attacked and I never saw the strike. Anyway it ended up being a Japanese victory?! At the end it looked like all three Japanese carriers were still afloat on the map even though the combat report said they were all sunk. I'm still fumbling through the game mechanics and reports. I find it all very confusing, but then I'm easily confused. [:'(]

Edited for political correctness. [:)]
