Hades -> splitting squads (6/18/2003 10:52:02 AM)

is there a way to make a big squadron of like 24 planes into two smaller ones of 12?

No (although I would like that)...

WitP will have a feature where you can split air groups.

:confused: I suppose you’re kidding.

You’ve missed elephant while watching those funny monkeys.

It's War in the Pacific 1941-1945, quasi-UV. Go, take a look.

:)

I just have two kids (a third on the way), so funny monkeys is remarkably apt.

When I do have time for games I fly in Aces High, and now UV.

...and btw the splitting squad question was the first one I posed to the guy who introduced me to the game on Monday or Tuesday. ;)

Two kids, third on the way, UV and Aces High! :eek: Impressive! I have one kid and I thought I’m good at free time management, being able to play UV, fly with my IL-2 Sturmovik squadron on virtual Ostfront, but 2 kids and third on the way… I would probably miss even those monkeys! ;) You know how to plan things!.

Curval -> (6/21/2003 9:03:01 PM)

I have heard some very good things about IL2, alot of AH guys fly in that game too. The graphics that I have seen from screenshots looks absolutely awesome, but I haven't flown it primarily because of time constraints, but if I was being 100% honest it is also because I don't want to have to set up a new profile for my X45 and learn a new game, when I have just started to get better at AH.

As far as time management goes, I usually have to wait until 10.00pm before I can play anything (kids fed, bathed and all dishes done etc etc), so at that point it isn't the kids I have to worry about..it's the wife. Now that she is pregnant she usually hits the sack at the same time as the kids, but that will change in about 6 months....oh yes, it will change.

Mad Daddy -> Split Sqns (6/21/2003 9:29:49 PM)

Yes, there is a way to split sqns into two. You have to use the editor located in the Scenarios folder. It is quite easy. Just find the sqn. that you want to split in the Air Groups page. Find a blank line and create your edits.

Can this be done "in game"...from the sounds of what you are talking about you can split squads before the scenario starts using the editor. Can it be done while in the middle of a scenario?

Mad Daddy -> (6/22/2003 12:27:45 AM)

Hi Curval,

Sorry,but once the game starts you can not split sqns into two parts.

Subchaser what is Virtual Ostfront? Is it a good place to play IL-2 online? Do you have any details?

Curval -> (6/23/2003 1:19:13 AM)

The "Ostfront" is German for Eastern Front..ie vs. Russia. That's what he means..I think.

There is a mod called "Forgotten Battles", but I think IL2 is all Germany vs Russia on the Ostfront.

Hey Curval,
I Have IL-2 and FB. It sounded like Ostfront was a site or organization that supported online play. The official site at gamespy rarely has more than 10-15 players on it and I know there are more of online palyers out there. Just wondering where they all are.

Snigbert -> (6/23/2003 3:36:37 AM)

Is Il-2 a multiplayer online style game? Can you use various Soviet and German planes, or just the Il-2?

Snigbert,

IL-2 is a flight sim that came out about a year and a half ago. Forgotten Battles was an add-on turned sequel that hit shelves about 9 mos ago. It has online support and FB intro'd a dynamic campaign mode. Action centers around the tactical Ground Support air war of the Eastern Front. There are literally tons of a/c modelled and most are flyable. The detail of the flight models, skins, and overall look of the game are amazing. You can play as a Bomber pilot, fighter pilot, or attack pilot. German, Russian, Rumanian, and Finnish campaigns are available.

Check out this site. If you are a true historian you'll love the specific skins that have been created for all the famous and not so famous pilots/units

It looks very nice, but I'm not much of a flight simulator player. I used to play Warbirds a bit, but I couldnt get into it as much as with turn based wargames.

Subchaser -> (6/23/2003 5:37:32 PM)

Ostfront or Virtual East Front (VEF) is on-line command game based on IL-2 Sturmovik simulator. This is the place where virtual Luftwaffe and Red Air force squadrons are meeting in combat in realistic environment.

VEF

It's already v.2.0, 2 month ago we've finished War circle, was epic battle over Berlin. Now it's June '41 again, and we're rebuilding system.

This is not just dogfighting, we’re recreating ww2 air war. This is how it was working last CE (now VEF engine is a little bit changed) , at first VEF HQ guys create mission based on current war situation and upload it on our server; example- 23 June 1942, kuban area, Axis forces goal – panzer battalion must take village and clear area around nearby airfield, Read Army goal – prevent Axis advance and counterattack them. HQ guys create all ground forces and assign their missions, setting up weather and other factors. Then Luftwaffe and Soviet AF HQs (2-3 sqn. leaders) plan what their squadrons will participate, what they will do to support ground forces and send mission assignments (free hunt, patrol area and time, escort, ground attack etc.) to the acting sqn.leaders, who instructing other pilots. Sometimes one side wins only because of better-planed missions. Then the real action begins.

On big missions we have 2-3 squadrons on each side (LW guys are acting as staffels/groups of particular JG/SG/KG and SAF pilots as IAP/ShIAPs squadrons), but it doesn’t mean that one side cannot get numerical superiority over the other, I remember one sortie when I arrived to my patrol area near Smolensk with my flight of four Yak-1B and met there 12 Bf-109G-6 from II/JG54, hopefully we were above them and noticed them first in the gap between clouds, I’ve lost only one my wingmen, didn’t score any kills but scratched their leader, later he told me that he wasn’t able to continue fighting because of oil on his windscreen, he was almost blind.

We’re flying in full realism mode and even piloting itself quite problematic, navigation mistakes, losing formation in heavy clouds, operational losses (on my first sortie on VEF I’ve chopped off my leader’s tail with propeller on take off… he was very upset :) ) In FB addon engine management became even more complicated, radiator, oil radiotar, propeller step, turbocharger, busting systems, fuel pressure, even magneto and many other important things are manually controlled and in harsh dogfighting it is very hard to do all these at once, only in IL-2:FB I’ve realized what benefits German pilots had, on Bf-109 many basic control system were fully automatic and pilot was able to concentrate solely on combat, I think it’s more important than even 109’s outstanding climb rate. When you’re flying aircraft like Yak-1, LaGG-3 or even P-40 you can’t leave all those gauges without attention, 1/3 of time in combat you’re looking at those gauges, it’s hard but utterly realistic.

“Il-2: Forgotten Battles” is the best simulator right now, look at all those awards at official site. Some quotes from reviews:

"The first "classic" sim of the century. The Best World War II flight simulator ever!"

“I wish that there was a better word to use other than 'best' to describe IL2. However, IL2 is just that, the best. Whether you are a flight-sim fan, WW2 fan, or just interested in a flying game, skip the rest and play IL2. You won’t be disappointed."

"For combat flight sim enthusiasts, IL-2 Sturmovik is a dream"

"If you are even remotely considering getting a WW2 flight sim IL2 should be at the top of your list. It is better than anything out there. I’ve flown the rest, and now I’ve flown the best."

"Benchmark in Flight-Sim Technology."

"You won't find better under PC's sky!"

"IL-2 Sturmovik is a vitamin injection of originality, putting the sheer joy of flying back into combat flight simulation. It's an experience you do not want to miss."

"a dream in every simmer's eyes" "Utterly fantastic"

VEF gives you as realistic combat environment as possible. Last Saturday I was flying as flight leader with my friends from 211th IAP, I was flying all night (in VEF all day 22 june 1941), made 6 sorties, in the morning I got 2 kills (Ju-87B) + 1 shared kill (also Ju-87) and damaged 1 Bf-109E over Dubniza, 10 miles south from Lvov, but at 18:45 I was shot down myself, pair of Bf-109F-2 from II/JG77 bounced me, it was a classic attack - 6’oclock high from the sun, I was ready to land, already got a permission (sneaky bastards), my LaGG-3 lost right wing and left stabilizer, I saw them flying away from my aircraft with something else also important, hopefully I’ve managed to bail out.

Next day when I was rereading one book about air war during opening moves of the war, I’ve got an amazing feeling – “I’ve been there”. Il2 + VEF is terrific experience.

Soon many PTO aircraft will be modeled and two enthusiasts are already doing map of Guadalcanal area for 8/42-2/43 virtual campaign

Holy smokes...I stand corrected.

IL2 sounds amazing. The ONLY thing I don't like about it is that it is not "massively multiplayer". I think you have a 32 or 64 player limit on the servers?

AH2 is due out in the 3rd quarter of 2003. The game will run on a new graphics engine which I hope rivals IL2's. It will be mission based.

May give IL2 a look after reading the above though.

Russian company, designer of IL-2 is going to release 3rd version of IL-2 next summer, it will be impossible to run this new part on machines with characteristics lower than 1700Mhz 512RAM 64 Video, recommended requirements sounds a bit futuristic, but graphics will be as always, unmatched.

The ONLY thing I don't like about it is that it is not "massively multiplayer".

Virtual online war is a new project and there will be really massive multiplayer soon. Buy Il-2 FB and join ;)

Seems like one man army Rudel is going after Marat :-) .

Are there historical pilots in IL2?

Do anybody follow how historical pilots fare in UV. Seems to me that Saburo Sakai , Nishizawa & co. do not get kills ( In my games ). Their stats are awesome but mostly they get killed soon and seldom get kills.
