spence -> Invading Panama: Possibility for the IJA/IJN? (1/22/2019 7:01:10 PM)

In some past AAR the Japanese Player launched what amounted to a suicide mission against Portland, OR; and having captured it, eliminated all future reinforcements arriving at Portland. I don't really know how many ships that is but IRL the Kaiser Shipyards in and around Portland produced something like 50 CVEs which by itself is a heck of chunk of reinforcements. I'm not going to get into the real life effect but I did start wondering about the effect of losing the Panama Canal might have had on the US effort. I also noticed that Balboa has no CD guns and that the units which were assigned to its defense are not present in the game (or perhaps are mistakenly assigned elsewhere?). Now if the Japanese Player can't invade the Canal Zone then the lack of defenses there has no effect on the game. But if the Japanese can pull it off (no matter how) then the lack of defenses is pertinent. So is it possible? And if it is can they sabotage the Canal in some way to have a further effect on the game? I know they planned to bomb the Canal using submarine launched a/c at one point (presumably this attack was planned to have more effect than the attacks which were supposed to start fires in NW US forests).
