I see a lot of talk and complaints about the early war and how overpowered the axis are and how panzer are supermen. While those facts might be true. I feel that towards the end of the war there isn't really much point in playing once the soviets retake the initiative. No matter how many tanks i knock out the russian tank corps never seem to have to refit and just keep on coming. I encircle, then rout them and they might lose 10% of their armour. Make them retreat multiple hexes they might lose 30 tanks out of 300. Now i understand that this is payback for the soviets.

Yet in 41-42 the soviet player can encircle and cause attrition to the armoured spearheads of the axis and cause them some minor setbacks, setbacks none the less. However at this stage in the game i feel like there is no way to inflict any setbacks on the russians unless they make a significant error. This might be perceived as more of a rant, im just curious as to how axis players deal with the onslaught of the russians, other thank build fort lines, defend rivers and just retreat and conserve troops.

Depends on what you're looking to get out of it I suppose. You need internal motivation once 'wins' are measured by how little you lose. There's plenty of game for late-war German players, but there will be no victory in the conventional sense.

If you can content yourself with limiting enemy gains and countering operational moves it can be fun. But a long retreat isn't compelling gameplay for most folks I would imagine. It comes down to achieving things like 'stop them at the Vistula', or the Oder, or keep them out of Berlin. Advances are fun, retreats are not. It's down to finding goals within a losing framework and attempting to achieve them. For some this will be satisfying, for others, not so much.

I think most players 'deal with it' by starting a new game.
