"Buttoned" is used to indicate that the unit has gone to cover whereever it might be. It probably should be a different word, but at least it conveys the idea.
And a buttoned unit can change its stance automatically if it feels the immediate danger has passed or it decides to become brave and make some sort of move.
Also when a unit decides to op fire, it will lose part of its cover, thus becoming "unbuttoned."
When it does, it becomes a better target for the enemy, of course.
