Going to be in Townsville for a few days.

Anyone know if there's a good military history museum there?

Would love to find out more about the place's role in WWII.

Thanks Raver, there's a lot of dedication gone in to that site.

I'm going to check out the museums listed.

I'll be based in Rowes bay so will tramp around some of the old site listed in that area.

Wife is 7 months pregnant and needs the excersise!

WERE THERE AS MANY AS 5 JAPANESE BUSH AIRFIELDS
IN AUSTRALIA DURING WW2?






One of my sources has suggested to me that there were as many as 5 Japanese hand-cleared operational bush airfields in Australia during WW2. He indicated they were mostly in The Kimberley in Western Australia.

Well after a few days in Townsville I found it to be a fine place.

Plenty of WWII military history (see Raver's post above).

Still a busy Port and Army base.

The US Navy has been putting in some pretty impressive ships for some R&R:

Also, lovely weather whilst more southerly Aussie cities are having their winter. 27 degrees today and not a cloud in the sky. The sea is a lovely temp for a swim!

To Sgt Striker.

There was a band of Aboriginies who walked out of the bush in the Kimberlies as recently as the early 1970's. They had never seen white people.

The Japanese could not possibly have had an airfield in Australia anywhere. Having said that, Western Australia is 5 times the size of Texas and today has 1/5th of the population.
