HalfLifeExpert -> Some advice on fighting the J-15 Flying Shark (2/11/2019 7:01:49 PM)

I posted this in the FB CMANO group, but wanted to put it here too:

I'd like some advice on this one. I've been trying to tackle the new community scenario 'Sri Lanka Crisis, 2021' as India. The problem is that neither of my fighter aircraft (MiG-29K, or SU-30MKI) can seem to put of a fight against the PLAN's J-15 flying off the Liaoning. The latter seem to have better manuvering or countermeasures or better missiles. I've only had success against the J-15 using ship based SAMs. How can I put up a better fight against the Liaoning's air wing?

I cheat... I maneuver my assets just outside their fuel range and commence to luring them in 2 at a time, and out flank them.

It seems to take an inordinate amount of shooting to kill them so have your flankers full of bullets (with no emissions)

Have the bait and a ship light up the radar, It's like a moth to flame.

J-15 maybe underarmed, but they still have bigger mileage than MiG-29K. So it’s unwise to directly confront them because it’s meant for long-distance strike and hitting anti-sub aircraft. That will only draw your attentions away.

My strategy learned from Spartly Spat is push your fleet closer to Liaoning, and launch AAM and SAM at J-15 during their take offs. Most carrier-borne jets are vulnerable when launch from the carrier a moment after. Also, Liaoning is not Kuznetnsov, you will not receive 16 Granite missies by the lacks of VLS.

Make sure you set WRA to fire at like 80% of max range. This will give your missiles a better probability of a kill because of a reduced distance penalty. The downside is you often will be fired on first (if the scenario designer hasn't put the same restriction on) assuming comparable missile ranges. Now, there's will have a lower probability of a hit, but it's still unnerving for you and your digital pilots, and can trash some sensor shots. Another option is to manually fire one missile at max range to force them defensive and screw their sensor picture, then close in to 70-80% max range and fire 2-3 missiles. It's costly in terms of missiles, but you have a pretty solid chance of getting a kill against most enemy aircraft.

i don't know. maybe it's good specific advice in this scenario as 29Ks carry few (2?) LR missiles, however in general i feel like conceding first shot advantage is a losing game as there is no real nonthreatening shots in CMANO.

i can't really think of a way to beat superior aircraft in a nose-to-nose. the classic strategy is to go all "guerilla warfare in the air" where you exclusively ambush people and never try frontal engagements, but if that's not possible in your scenario (and depending on what your objective is supposed to be) you may just have to suffer.

i guess if my objective was to strike something, i would simply marshal my forces in a big wave and try to shove through. "trading" aircraft in CAPs is very unlikely to ever give you a favorable outcome; generally you're going to lose all the trades you make so you just have to shove through with as much mass as you can muster. you may lose alot of your frontline escorts, however hopefully the strike can at least succeed; you may only get one shot, however.

edit: also i haven't opened up the scenario, but if you have additional forces you may be able to laterally defeat the threat. if you have forces that the aircraft will have trouble countering, you can use them to shut down the airport, defeating the air threat without actually engaging them in the air. once they are grounded or forced to divert, you can push your 29Ks against weaker threats that they will handle better.
