The struggle for Europe by Chester Wilmot.
It primarily deals with the last year of the war in Europe, but there is a lot of detail from the earlier war years too. The part dealing with the preparations for Normandy are particularly good.
Wilmot was a war reporter who landed in Normandy with 6th airborne Division on D-day, but the book is written very much from a strategic perspective.

Edit - sorry, misread WWI as WWII. Wilmot's book is still worth a read though.
